Budapest in April 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, prices in hotels and excursions. What to see in Budapest in early April and closer to May, where to go in Hungary – says Eurotraveler.
The coronavirus epidemic has made significant adjustments to the vacation routes of citizens traveling around Europe. And if they did not forget the well-known tourist centers: Paris and Barcelona, Rome and Venice, then they began to open new ones.
Because it turned out that the Czech Republic and Prague are no worse and even cheaper. That in Spain, as it turns out, there are very interesting Madrid and Seville. And in Portugal: Lisbon and Porto.
As for Budapest and Hungary in general, they became a real revelation. A kind of treasure, the existence of which many did not even suspect. Moreover, a treasure that is especially dazzling not at the hottest time of the year.
First, with the help of photos, and then experimentally, the most active travelers found out that in Budapest in April it is not only warm, but also enchantingly beautiful. And they were amazed that they had not thought of this before!
After all, according to all the basic principles, nature at 47 degrees north latitude is simply obliged to bloom vigorously no later than mid-spring?
Most travelers, however, still have no idea about this. So if you meet competitors in Budapest during April, most of them will be Hungarians themselves.
That’s why hotel prices are for you will please They won’t upset you to tears – they are just getting ready to climb the seasonal peaks!
Weather in Budapest in April
You will hardly find any mention of this topic in reviews. And there will be much more discussion on the topic of where it is better to go shopping or which thermal bath in Budapest to choose?!
In principle, this circumstance alone is enough to understand that in April the weather in the capital of Hungary will not cause serious inconvenience. So you will be able to fully implement the planned program of exploring the city.
And even – if you plan – you will have time to visit places near Budapest.

A careful reading of meteorological statistics over the past few years fully confirms this conclusion. Although stable and does not smellthe local climate will not present any particularly unpleasant surprises either.
However, it is worth remembering that in early April the air temperature in Budapest tends to fluctuate, it’s like riding a roller coaster. Street thermometers either show up to +15 °C, or plunge into pessimism, even during the day without sticking their “nose” beyond the range of +6-8 °C.
In the second ten days of April it usually gets warmer in Budapest. Not too significantly, but still noticeable: daytime air temperatures move to the range of +16-18 °C. On the threshold of May it can become very joyful – at times up to +20-22 degrees Celsius, and vice versa – cooler.
Therefore, those who believe in the best will be right. But prepare for what will be found in Budapest and at the end of April no higher +15-16 °C.
Is this weather typical for this area? Basically – yes, again, and the reviews are full of optimism.
However, in some years you may encounter a (pleasant) exception to the rule.
In particular, even before mid-April, air temperatures in Budapest more than once or twice reach the range of +18-20 °C. However, they never go any further.
And the month ends well if it is on a similar “wave”: from +17 to +21 °C
Precipitation and wind
Rains are traditionally rare – it can rain moderately from the sky for a maximum of 3-4 days. But clear days in numbers they successfully compete with simply cloudy ones.
Yes, perhaps they even surpass them.
The wind is not too strong – the number of days when it blows at a speed greater than 6-8 m/s is a maximum of ten. However, it is necessary to remember that dampness can literally penetrate to the bones (the Danube does not warm up quickly).
And if you are planning to look at the city from the open deck of a cruise ship – for real warm yourself up.

How to dress
All of the above suggests that in April people in Budapest do not wear the most summer clothes. And not taking some sweaters, pullovers, or a quilted jacket with you on a trip is extremely frivolous.
After all, if one day allows you to strip down to your T-shirt and think about shorts, then another will remind you that winter is not far away and can return at any moment.
As for shoes, you should pack moccasins for warm weather in your luggage. And on your feet put on shoes on thick non-slip soles in case of frosty mornings.
Yes, you’ll probably go there anyway – in April, except in southern Europe, they regularly promise above +15 °C.
For children, it is worth taking light hats and scarves with you. Moreover, such accessories are unlikely to take up much space in your suitcase. But sometimes they can help out a lot!
Prices 2026
In the case of Budapest, it seems logical to pay special attention to the rental of individual apartments. Because in most cases they cost cheaperthan a hotel room, and in terms of area – most often – much larger.
And you will almost certainly be located much closer to the city center.
An exception should be made only for the thermal and therefore quite expensive (from 170-180 € for two per day – on weekdays, not weekends) Ensana Thermal Margaret Island. A vacation in which you will relax so much that you won’t even remember about the extra money you spent.
Decent apartments can be rented for ~100 € for four (tourist tax included). For example, we advise you to first of all pay attention to the Elegant apartment with Buda Castle view, located in pleasant proximity to both the Buda Fortress and the Chain Bridge.
A couple of travelers can save some money by staying in the slightly cheaper apartments (from 80 € per night) Home sweet Home. Spacious enough so that you don’t feel claustrophobic and located also chicly – at the foot of the Fortress Hill.
As for excursions in Budapest, they are still inexpensive. In particular, for only 15-20 € you can take part in an interesting introductory walk through the old city (not in Russian, however).
But for out-of-town trips: in Szentendre and Visegrad, Esztergom, they are asking for much more money – from 80-90 € per person…

Things to do
After all, only a leisurely walk around Buda with an inspection of the old streets, Fortress Hill, fountains, monuments and the palace will eat up most of one day.
But, sorry, you still want to relax and have a snack. Probably even do a little shopping – in a grocery store, at least.
After a day filled with impressions, you need to reward yourself with something more elegant? Originally Hungarian, of course, like a bottle of Tokay from the 2010 vintage.
Here is what to buy as a gift for yourself in Budapest.
By the way, note to yourself somewhere that Catholic (and Protestant) Easter is celebrated on a grand scale in Hungary. In 2026, it falls on Sunday, April 5th.
And the Monday following it is official holiday!

In general, we outlined everything that can be seen in the city, trying to fit into a limited number of days, in a separate article. For those who are too lazy to read, we list the main attractions here:
Where to go
In the nearby suburbs of Budapest in the spring you should definitely visit the amazingly photogenic town of Szentendre and the ruins of the Visegrad fortress, which was once the main royal residence. A trip to Esztergom would also be the right step, especially since it is nearby.
Note that all three of the above locations, like pearls, can be strung for a one-day excursion route. However, not the cheapest…
The Baroque imperial residence in Gödel, the amazingly quiet and, at the same time, very beautiful city of Gyor, the ancient Pannonhalma Abbey, protected by UNESCO due to its uniqueness – all these places will be a worthy adornment of your trip to Hungary.
It is quite possible that you will reach the shores of Lake Balaton – everything blooms here in April. You will visit the resort Balatonfüred, explore cozy Tihany, and see the amazing thermal lake Heviz.
You can try it if you wish – taking baths here is beneficial at any time of the year!
During your trip to those parts, be sure to plan a visit to the town of Keszthely. The main decoration of which is the sprawling Baroque Festetics Palace, whose splendor is not inferior to other European royal residences.
