Rome in April 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, number of tourists, prices in hotels and excursions. What to do and see in Rome in April, holidays and interesting events, where to go in Italy – says Eurotraveler.
If you are planning to visit any European country on an excursion rather than a business visit, then April is probably – the best time for this. It is no longer cold, but not yet hot, usually quite clear and not full of rain.
In addition, in the central month of spring, prices in hotels and restaurants have not yet peaked. And there aren’t that many tourists.
But what about Easter and corresponding holidays, you ask? When literally every European considers it his duty to leave his home to travel?
Yes, we agree, during this period some large cities in Europe look crowded. But if you have the opportunity to travel outside of peak dates (in 2026, Catholic Easter falls on April 5), then we assure you that you won’t have to complain about huge crowds and the literal inability to be alone.
Again, for some, the abundance of tourists is not a critical factor at all. And it’s easy to verify this – just come to Rome in April and visit St. Peter’s Square on a festive Sunday.
However, in our article we will look at ordinary weekdays.
When demand does not outpace supply. And you will be able to implement your planned program of sightseeing without regard to external circumstances.
And we will begin traditionally, with what
Weather in Rome in April
In short, it deserves a lot of praise. And even individual stories – whoever has been to Rome in April, when all the nature around is blooming and reaches for the sun and summer, will, of course, come here again at this same time.
To feel the taste for life again and seem rejuvenated. At least with the soul, if not with the body…
It happens that already at the very beginning of April, air temperatures in Rome reach a level of +20 °C. And they even step over it: easily and confidently!

Although cautious travelers should still count on a maximum of +16-18 °C. Moreover, such temperatures are quite enough to not freeze during long excursions around the city.
Believe me, you don’t want to leave the streets even after dark!
The length of the day, by the way, ranges from 12 hours and 40 minutes to 14 hours. Accordingly, the sun goes to bed between 19.35-20.05…
In other years in April, the weather in Rome swings for a very long time. As a result, until the middle of the month and even the 20th, street thermometers during the day show a maximum of +17-18 °C. Cold snaps of up to +10-14 degrees Celsius are also possible – however, they last no longer than a couple of days.
Nights in Rome, even in mid-April, are cool – no higher than +10-12 °C.
Towards the end of the month, the sun begins to smile more and more often. And finally, it stops saving energy – on the threshold of May in the “Eternal City” air temperatures reach +20-24 °C.
On some days it happens warmer. So much so that you are surprised to note that summer has arrived in the Italian capital hugely ahead of schedule.
Rains
The amount of precipitation is small – up to 30-40 mm per month. The probability of a powerful spring downpour is simply negligible – usually 2-3 weak ones occur in Rome during the whole of April. rain.
Which seem to be designed to clean up the Italian capital a little after the winter. But they do not intend to seriously disrupt the excursion plans of tourists visiting the city.
The probability of a clear day ranges from 60-70%. Which, translated into human language, means that in the middle of spring Rome will appear before you all flooded with sunlight.
And literally enveloped in the aromas of rapidly blooming nature.

How to dress
It is unlikely that you should put winter or at least frankly warm clothes in your suitcase. An ordinary one should be enough for all occasions. spring jacket. Just in case, duplicated with a cardigan and sweatshirt.
You can take with you an elegant raincoat, a stylish light coat, a fashionable jacket. Equipped in this way, you are unlikely to stand out – the residents of Rome themselves dress this way in April.

But you should take special care of your shoes. Because the “Eternal City”, as you know, stands on 7 hills. And it’s better to make long journeys along it V comfortable sneakers and moccasins, boots.
And there is no doubt that these movements will take a long time – the Roman spring has been exciting the minds of mankind for centuries. Here you want to walk a lot and sit for a long time on stones, steps and walls.
Trying to grab your piece of quiet happiness. Which, it turns out, doesn’t really think about hiding!
And we are not the only ones who think so. Read almost any review from a person who visited the Italian capital at this particular time.
Prices 2026
If you work hard and start booking no later than February, then for April dates you will find good and not ruinously expensive options in Rome. Priced from 150 € per night (taxes may not be taken into account) and – naturally – not in the very center of the city.
But then, here’s happiness, not far from the Vatican. And that very treasured square (St. Peter’s) that we wrote about at the very beginning of our review!
In this area, we first look to see if there is room at the Ecclesia Domus Vatican In, a guest house that is located near the wall surrounding the “Papal City”. There is also a metro station nearby (Cipro, orange line), which solves all the traveler’s transport problems at once.
If you don’t see anything wrong with staying away from the city center, then here’s another great option – Una Chicca a Roma. B&B hotel, which is located not even on the outskirts, but outside of Rome.
But, however, 20 minutes by train from Tiburtina station. And yes, in April, accommodation here for two people with breakfast will cost ~130 € per day.
Here is the Rome metro map and fares.
A 3-hour tour of the Vatican Museums, combined with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, will take place if you don’t regret ~40 €.
Things to do
In mid-spring, both nature and people bloom. The first does this violently and uncontrollably, charging everything around with its energy, the second tries to channel this power into a slightly more creative direction.
Designing gardens, organizing various events and holidays. Which naturally give the season and place a distinct originality.

Rome did not escape this in April either. And how could the “Eternal City” remain aloof from such a creative process?
So, having arrived here in mid-spring, a traveler can become a participant in extraordinary events. The main one, apparently, is
Holiday
dedicated to the birthday of Rome, April 21, 753 BC. Obviously, it would be completely wrong to “pass by” and not celebrate such an impressive event.
After all, Natale di Roma is one of the most fun and colorful events in the capital of Italy. Parades and processions are held everywhere on this day, and you can enter many museums in the city for free.
The opening after the break of the Roman Rose Garden, Roseto Comunale, is also timed to coincide with the birthday of Rome. Entrance is again free, inside you can see more than 1,000 varieties of this amazing, in the full sense of the word, royal flower.
The Rose Garden is open daily until early June. So if you are planning to go to Rome in May, you will also be able to enjoy the spectacle of blooming “glades”.
At the end of April, the most tourist staircase in the city, the Spanish Steps, begins to be decorated with blooming azaleas. The tradition dates back to the 18th century, and today it has already become a real event, which numerous tourists come to see.
It is also worth remembering that on April 25, the whole of Italy celebrates Liberation Day or Festa della Liberazione to mark the end of the Nazi occupation and, in principle, the fascist regime. On this day, the victims of the resistance are remembered, with a memorial parade held from the Colosseum to the Porta San Paolo.
What to see
Who would doubt that exactly attractions are the real purpose of a visit to Rome in April for any traveler eager for true man-made beauty. Because, in principle, he will be able to afford to wander through the ruins and sit for a long time on the foundation of some ancient wall, undisturbed by anyone.
Of course, you have the right to draw up a plan for visiting the “Eternal City” yourself, taking into account your own needs and experience. But just in case, we will still list those places that make up the glory of the ancient city.
It seems quite natural to want to start a visit to the Italian capital with its Forum. And perhaps visit the Colosseum with an excursion – if you have not previously seen the ancient amphitheater from the inside.

Then we will strongly advise look near the ruins of the palace of Emperor Augustus on the Palatine Hill – in April they will only open to visitors after the winter break. And then go inside what remains of Nero’s “Golden House”.
And consolidate this visual course of acquaintance with the architecture of Ancient Rome with the perfectly preserved Trajan’s Column and Caesar’s Forum.
Well, maybe also a visit to the Pantheon. A majestic pagan temple that did not lose its religious function even with the advent of Christianity.
Churches
Definitely worth spending a day or two on the Roman churches. Moreover, this is in addition to St. Peter’s Cathedral, the main and largest Catholic church in the world.
You should definitely pay a visit to the amazingly beautiful inside of Santa Maria in Araceli on the Capitoline Hill. And also Sant’Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navone, designed by one of the architectural geniuses of the Baroque era, Francesco Borromini.
The largest square of the capital of Italy, Piazza del Popolo, is also home to a couple of the cutest churches.
You must throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain to return to Rome at least 1 more time. And it’s worth admiring the suburban villa of the Dukes d’Este in Tivoli in order to experience the delight of such an organic fusion of nature and the creation of human hands.
Where to go
It would be unreasonable to neglect the opportunity to travel somewhere from Rome in April. Until Italy was once again overrun with sheer crowds of tourists.
Not far from the capital city, we recommend visiting the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo. And/or soak up the sea air on the coast in Lido di Ostia.
Active tourists will probably get to Vitterbo or Orvieto. Or even both of these charming, quaint towns not far from the Italian capital.
Fans of rail travel may decide to travel by train from Rome to Florence. After all, just a couple of hours and you will be able to see the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palatine Gallery.
Well, for those who are able to stay in Italy for a few more days, we advise you to go to Venice. Which is connected to Rome by high-speed trains, and – like Florence – can be the real “cherry” on the cake of your spring trip!
