Rome in December 2025 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices in hotels and excursions. What to see in Rome at the beginning of December, at Christmas and before the New Year, where to go in Italy – says Eurotraveler.
Rome is good any time of the year! Recently, however, such a statement is time to undergo a thorough revision.
Indeed, who could enjoy a stay in the “Eternal City” in July or August? Only for convinced masochists. Or a small category of tourists, so hardened that temperatures of about or even above +40 degrees Celsius against the background of high humidity do not leave any mark on their “armor”.
Everyone else is forced to put up with it because they can’t or don’t want to get out at another time. And therefore they try not to pay attention to the weather, which is quite unsuitable for “spiritual” walks around Rome.
And also incredible crowds of tourists, a ban on swimming in fountains and other restrictions from municipal authorities…
There is a way out (and a simple one!), however! And this not switching to night waking mode.
You just need to go to Rome in December or choose a similar “low” month. And enjoy on the streets of the Italian capital, if not loneliness, then relative sparseness of people.
Often even silence, calm and clarity, bright and clean colors
Winter is here – like a revelation. Allowing you to feel and understand what doesn’t even come to mind, for example, in the fussy and stuffy June. Or what month is considered the best to visit Rome?
Weather in Rome in December
Allows a lot! For in the Italian capital, in comparison with November, it becomes noticeably sunnier. The amount of precipitation decreases proportionately – to 30-40 mm per month.
Daytime air temperatures in Rome in early December range from +10-14 °C (sometimes +17 degrees Celsius). But closer to Christmas, the local atmosphere is not inclined to warm up above +8-12 °C by midday.

The nights are cheerful! And the air temperature, which sets after sunset (+2-10 °C), forces you to be more careful in choosing clothes.
However, you still won’t find any regrets in reviews of the trip at this time of year – after all, all attention is focused on the surrounding beauty!
One way or another, but wearing only a light windbreaker in December Rome, you you’ll freeze quickly. In a down jacket, on the contrary, you will overheat and sweat.
So it’s worth dressing up in the Southern European style: throw on a weightless but not windy (and, just in case, waterproof) jacket, tie a bright scarf to lift your spirits. Wear sneakers or worn-in, comfortable, demi-season boots.
And then you will definitely be able to do long walks along the streets. You will be able to see all the most interesting things in Rome, without losing sight of any of the main attractions.
For such attentiveness in local summer weather Sometimes you just don’t have enough health!
Italians don’t like to wear hats—they care about their hair—but this practical wardrobe item won’t hurt freezing tourists. Especially if they are going wander the streets in the eveningsobserving architectural antiquities in the light of modern lanterns.
Frost
in Rome occur extremely rarely and are not capable of seriously affecting planned events. Since the air will still warm up during the day minimum up to +10 °С!
Heavy snowfalls also very rare occurrence. But the snowflakes that barely reach the asphalt and immediately melt occasionally try to spoil the mood of the Romans.

We remember that you can come to Italy by car and not “shod” with winter tires – this is in principle optional. This fact eloquently testifies to the climatic features of the country!
PS Although, for our part, we would advise tourists to think seriously about seasonal re-shoeing of their car. After all, they will almost certainly have to travel through Alpine passes. And there is enough snow and ice for them in winter!
Prices 2025
Cost of air tickets to Rome from Moscow with transit in Istanbul cannot be considered too high. Because for round trip flights with a suitcase weighing up to 20 kg you will pay about 50,000 rubles (500 €).
As for hotels, we will first of all recommend the inexpensive (from 90 € per night) guest house Una Chicca a Roma. Seemingly located outside the city. But really so convenient that you will spend very little time traveling to Rome and back.
Not good, need it closer to the center? Then catch an option not far from Termini Station and a 15-minute walk from the Colosseum – Domus Ferruccio.
Slightly more expensive than the previous one, but still setting quite reasonable prices. Especially considering the convenience of its location from all points of view (the entrance to Rome’s Vittorio Emanuele metro station on the orange line is nearby).
Excursions with Russian-speaking guides in general can be called inexpensive — for 30-35 € you will be immersed in the magic of Rome for three hours on a walking tour in the company of up to 10 people (in winter there will obviously not be so many tourists). If you want something more traditional, for example, wandering around the Vatican in the company of a guide, then you need to cook from 70-75 €.

Things to do
The abundance of opportunities in Rome, even in December, is amazing. The very small number of tourists is also surprising.
How can you miss such a brilliant opportunity to be completely unpressured by anyone? next to eternal beauty?!
Due to the relatively low probability of rain and the predicted abundance of sunshine, you can plan especially active pastime. Including not only exploring the most interesting places in Rome, but also trips beyond its borders.
In the first case, we advise you not to forget about Cordonato, Michelangelo’s Staircasewhich leads to Capitol Hill. Indeed, from its steps, watching sunsets over the “Eternal City” turns into a real event, a milestone in life.
At the top of the Capitoline Hill stands the Basilica of Santa Maria in Araceli, one of the most beautiful in Rome. In December there will not be many tourists inside, and you will be able to see it in detail stunning interior.
Beautiful sunset views can also be seen from the top of the Spanish Steps, one of the most famous landmarks in Rome.
You are almost guaranteed to be impressed if you decide to watch the sunset from Pincho Hill. Before this, having walked through an almost deserted place at this time Villa Borghese park.

As for country walks, even in winter you can visit the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo. Although, of course, to create the right impression It’s better to see this place near Rome in May. Well, or in early to mid-autumn.
They literally ask themselves to visit the wonderful ancient towns of Viterbo or Orvieto. Whatever – you can always amuse yourself with short trips and outside the Lazio region!
Where? Yes, there are plenty of options.
For example, a fast train gets from Rome to Florence in 1.5 hours. And the Red Arrow will spend only about ten hours on the road, hurrying from the Italian capital to Naples!
As for the duration of the trip from Rome to Venice, she assumes that in the “City of Canals” you will have to stay at least overnight. But you won’t mind – “La Serenessima” is a place you can’t get tired of?!
Reviews
Those few tourists who took the risk and visited Rome before the New Year have little reason for dissatisfaction. After all, the weather at this time, if not ideal for walks and trips, is close to it.
Slush days, which can completely ruin a trip, happen infrequently, but on the contrary, there is a lot of sunshine
The main thing that is especially memorable is – small number of tourists. The previously ubiquitous Chinese tour groups are no longer flowing in today. And on the embankments of the Tiber, at times you can feel lonely.
A special compliment goes to the prices. Apart from a short period at the very end of December, they are distinguished by commendable modesty. And they won’t make a hole even in a modest vacation budget.
