The German Historical Museum in Berlin recreated part of the so -called Fuhrerbunker, where Hitler spent the last months of his life and committed suicide in 1945.
In truth, this is not a real Hitler bunker. He was located not far from the Reich Chancellery and was almost completely destroyed in 1989. Now there is parking in that place. No memorial, only a small sign reports about the Fuhrer’s shelter that was once here. This was done to avoid the pilgrimage of neo -Nazis. However, the public interest is so great and does not subside for so long that the museum decided to reconstruct the bunker. As stated on the museum’s website, for educational purposes and as a tribute to memory. Reconstruct, but place in another place – in a nearby bomb shelter, also the time of World War II on Schöneberger Street, 10 minutes from Potsdamer Plaz.

The exposition of the recreated Fuhrerbunker is devoted to its history: a model of a winding network of underground rooms and halls of a real bunker (on a scale of 1:25) is presented here,
Original photos of the demolished shelter and information about the history of its construction and functioning. You can see the recreated interior of Hitler’s working office, as well as shots from the German film “Bunker” dedicated to his last days. The issue of reconstructing other bunker interiors is still being discussed. To avoid the possible violent reactions of visitors, the exposition can only be inspected, accompanied by a guide. Excursions, lasting an hour and a half, begin in the bomb shelter for the civilian population of Berlin, designed for 3.5 thousand people, although 12 thousand people were hiding in it in the last days of the war. This, according to the plan of museum workers, will allow visitors to compare the conditions of stay and the situation in Hitler’s bunker and ordinary Germans. Excursions are held in German and English. Photography is prohibited.

In general, this topic – albeit not the creation of a memorial dedicated to Hitler, but the historical reconstruction associated with it – causes great disputes in Germany. The website of the German Historical Museum several times says about millions of victims of World War II, Holocaust, Genocide. However, the leadership of another Berlin Museum – “Topography of Terror” – who talks about the crimes of the Nazis and is located next to a copy of the bunker, accused the creators of replicas of trying to organize a spectacular show in a situation where it is inappropriate. Seven years ago, the museum of wax figures Madame Tussaus tried to expose
Hitler’s figure, but the second visitor had already beheaded the exhibit with a cry with a cry “No War!”. And the authorities of Austria in October promised to demolish the house in the city of Braunau-Am-Inn, in one of the rooms of which the dictator was born.
