Cyprus in May 2026 – is it worth going on vacation and where? Weather in Ayia Napa and Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca, reviews, water and air temperature, is it possible to swim, prices for air tickets and hotels? What to see in Cyprus in early May and late spring, what to do, where to go with children – says Eurotraveler.
Cyprus is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey and Greece, north of Egypt. This pleasant location allows the island to exist in a unique climate. It is difficult to define it in a nutshell.
On the one hand, this climate is distinctly Mediterranean, that is, quite dry and very sunny. Thanks to the abundance of light and excellent conditions for swimming in the sea, the period from late April to October is the best time for a holiday in Cyprus.
On the other hand, this climate is too hot, literally! Because already in June it becomes too hot in Cyprus.
And at the peak of summer on the “Island of Aphrodite” the African heat is simply “prescribed” with temperatures above +50 °C. And absolutely excessive dry air!
This is difficult to tolerate even by local (unpretentious – if you want to live, you will adapt) plants.
Can you imagine what feelings tourists experience when arriving, for example, from central Russia? Or from the UK, for example?
That is why holidays in Cyprus in May are especially in demand among experienced travelers.
After all, the Mediterranean Sea at this time has already warmed up enough to take water baths and long swims. And the heat is not so significant that leaving an air-conditioned room poses a potential threat to health.
Again, it is at the end of spring that a number of colorful events are held in Cyprus holidays and festivalswhich will impress even the most indifferent vacationers. And the range of excursions around the island and cruises along the coast becomes especially rich at this point.
Almost convinced? Then – to the statistics!
Weather in Cyprus in May
As mentioned above, the period from late April to September is considered the driest and cloudless on the Mediterranean island. Moreover, the closer summer gets, the more days become more clearand the sun disappears less and less behind the clouds.
Daytime air temperatures in early May in Cyprus range between +23-30 °C. At night it becomes cooler, the atmosphere even on the coast can cool down to +16-17 °C.

Which, of course, urgently requires forethought and some preparation. In view of this, the suitcase of a vacationer heading to Cyprus in May should contain not only things appropriate for the South Sea, but also a little warmer clothes.
In particular, jackets and windbreakers, sweaters, pullovers or blouses will definitely help out in the event of evening gatherings on the open veranda of a restaurant or walks in Ayia Napa or Larnaca in May. We’re not even talking about trips to the mountainous areas of the island, where it can be cool even on a sunny day.
In some places in Cyprus, the air at night in May cools down to +5-7 °C – keep this in mind if you are planning to ride along the Troodos mountain range. In not very elevated areas far from the sea, on the contrary, it may be warmer than in seaside resorts – due to the lack of winds.
On the west coast of Cyprus, in May and other months, traditionally a little colderthan in the south or east.
So if you are planning to visit Paphos, keep in mind that the air temperature there is on average 1-2 degrees lower than in Limassol. And even by 2-3 degrees – when compared with Ayia Napa and Protaras.
Rains
If in April heavy rains occur on the island, then in May they occur in Cyprus no more than 3-4 times a month. Showers are rare, and the east coast looks preferable in this sense – here at the end of spring it rains a little more often clear days.
In Ayia Napa in May, it rains on average no more than 1-2 times a month. So when vacationers in Nissi Bay hotels are enjoying the sunny weather, a thunderstorm with downpour may be raging over Larnaca, and in Paphos they are anxiously watching the sky, colored in blue-leaden shades.
However, precipitation in Cyprus, even in spring, is often like manna. Because the sun here is not just warm – it is fierce.
And it dries everything around so much that by mid-summer yellow-brown shades predominate everywhere. Trees remain green only where residents water them.
Water temperature
Already in early May, the sea near Cyprus warms up to +20-21 °C. This allows the youngest or active vacationers to swim.
If young children should go into the water at this time, it would be in warm shallow water somewhere in Nissi Bay in Ayia Napa.

Towards mid-May, the sea water temperature off the coast of Cyprus reaches +22 °C. And by summer it begins to look closer to +23-24 °C.
If you compare the heating of water at different resorts, you will notice that in Paphos in the first ten days of May, swimming in the sea will charge you with incredible vivacity (+18-19 °C). And in Limassol it will be only a little warmer (up to +20 °C).
At the same time, in the east: in Ayia Napa and Protaras, water activities have a chance to appeal to a much larger number of vacationers (the sea is warmed up to +21-22 °C).
Prices 2026
It will be possible to stay in a good apartment in early May, for example, in Ayia Napa, if you have about 70 € per day. Here we usually recommend Millie’s Apartments – very clean and equipped with all the necessary appliances. Let us also praise the owner of the apartment who greets guests as if they were family.
Accommodation in Eleni Apartments will cost a little less money (about 60 € per day). A complex located in the very center of Ayia Napa and owned exclusively by client-oriented owners.
We would like to settle in Paphos in May, as we have heard that most of the most interesting sights of Cyprus Is it there or very close? Then pay attention to the Pagona Holiday Apartments complex.
Where even the most modest rooms consist of a bedroom and a living room and have their own kitchen. The residential complex has its own swimming pool, and the coast is less than 500 meters away.
If you rent a car in Cyprus directly at the airport, it will cost an additional 25-30+ € per day. But it will free up your hands in terms of sightseeing.
So, without resorting to the services of any excursion agencies, you can explore the Akamas National Park (for example) near Paphos in one day. And the next time, go admire the arches of Cape Greco.
By the way, don’t be afraid to drive in Cyprus! Since Cypriots themselves try to stay away from rental cars, who knows what to expect from a foreigner unfamiliar with local realities (and serpentines)? And local residents can easily recognize rental cars by red numbers!

Visas
In 2026, Russian citizens need to apply for a national Cypriot visa to enter (consular fee – 90 euros). Or have a passport with a valid Schengen multiple entry visa – mfa.gov.cy/cgsp10_ru/.
Previously, it was much simpler – to enter Cyprus, you applied for a pro-visa online. It was enough to fill out an application on the website and send it to the country’s embassy in Russia.
A day later, you had an electronic visa in your mailbox, which, along with your international passport, had to be presented at border control at the airport of arrival. There were no extradition fees – everything was free for Russian citizens.
Citizens of the EU countries, Great Britain, the USA, as well as many others, as well as holders of a residence permit and permanent residence permit, do not need a visa to enter Cyprus for a period of up to 90 days – cyprusvisa.eu/countries-not-required-entry-visa-cyprus.html.
Things to do
Note that it is in May that Cyprus truly blossoms: at other times of the year such a riot of greenery cannot be found here. It is not for nothing that the Flower Festival is held on the island at the beginning of the month. Anfestiria.
So on May 6, colorful processions are organized every year in Cyprus, generously decorated with flower arrangements. Interestingly, Anfestiria is dedicated to the flowers that can be found on the island.
Therefore, at the holiday you will definitely see roses of various shades and shapes, peonies, irises and lilies. As well as delicate alpine violets and anemones, meadow daisies.
Orthodox Easter in Cyprus is celebrated on a grand scale – both Friday and Monday are considered non-working days. But in 2026 the holiday will take place on April 12.
The holiday of the Holy Trinity or Kataklysmos is also widely celebrated on the island. In 2026, however, it will fall on June 1.
Besides the traditional festivals, there is a lot to see in Cyprus! And you need to use this, fortunately the local spring literally provokes trips and even travel.
Families with children should take into account that water parks will begin operating again in Cyprus in April. Including the largest of them – Water World Waterpark in Ayia Napa. There are own water parks in Limassol and Paphos.
What to see
Regardless of which resort in Cyprus you plan to stay in May, we recommend adding the following places to your list of must-visits:
Paphos Archaeological Park

Without a doubt, this is one of the main attractions of the island. After all, in the park you can see perfectly preserved fragments of ancient Roman mosaics: patrician villas were built in abundance within the city at one time.
Seaside Kato Paphos has an active nightlife. Located above, Ktima has retained its medieval flavor and is an open-air ethnographic museum.
North of Paphos, it is worth visiting the idyllic beaches of Coral Bay and Lara, visiting the Blue Lagoon and exploring the Akamas National Park. People from all over Cyprus come to the west coast to take a walk along the picturesque Avakos gorge.
Kykkos
In the mountains east of Paphos there is an Orthodox church Kykkos Monasteryonce founded by the Byzantine emperor. To get there on your own you need to be a fairly experienced driver – the mountain road is narrow and winding.
But the monastery is worth it – it rightfully bears the title of the main and most well-groomed on the island. Not far from Kykkos, in the mountains, there are the authentic villages of Pedoulas and Mutoulas, Kakopetria, which attract tourists like a magnet.
Limassol
On the way to Limassol, you should stop by to look at Petra tou Romeu, “Aphrodite’s Rock,” as well as a small sanctuary nearby. According to legend, the Greek goddess of love came onto land from the sea here.
In Limassol, you should visit the city castle, where Richard the Lionheart married Princess Berengaria of Navarre. After which he left for another crusade and never returned… The Limassol City Museum is also rich in exhibits.
Near Limassol there are the ruins of two large ancient cities: Kourion and Amathus. And also the Kolossi fortress, founded by the Knights of St. John.
In Larnaca
you need to visit in order to visit the Church of St. Lazarus and the archaeological excavation at the site of the ancient city of Kition. Or maybe it’s worth “dropping anchor” here – after all, the resort is considered the most inexpensive on the island. And the embankment is a good place to be, just walk around and breathe in the iodine-saturated sea air.
Diving enthusiasts will find a lot of offers to dive in order to look at the Zenonia ferry. Sank near Larnaca 30 years ago and has since become an unusual calling card of the island.
In Ayia Napa
it is difficult to find anything interesting other than beaches, clear sea and an ancient chapel. But outside the city, tourists will discover a real island pearl – Cape Greco. With amazingly beautiful rocks, as well as a lot of underwater grottoes.
It is from this resort, as well as from Protaras, that excursions to the Turkish part of Cyprus often start. To Famagusta and Salamis, Girne…
