In May, Caucasian Mineral Waters, like other places in the south of Russia, again become extremely popular among tourists. Over the winter, they have stayed in their native land and are happy to go on at least a short trip.
From this point of view, the intention to spend a few days in May in Pyatigorsk looks very sensible. Yes, this idea is occurring to more and more people today. But it hasn’t lost its appeal yet.
Even more citizens will come to Adler in May for vacation, we will no longer talk about Sochi. It gets very crowded in Anapa and Gelendzhik. Despite the mixed weather at the end of spring, Kislovodsk is also starting to get crowded.
Pyatigorsk, against the backdrop of all the listed places, still looks like an oasis. A haven for people seeking first to see natural beauty: see the Elbrus region, visit Dombay and Arkhyz. But don’t forget that a relaxed holiday, even a short vacation, at a balneological resort is a great thing!
Yes, we will not argue that the weather in Pyatigorsk in May is damp. In terms of the number of rainy days, it successfully outstrips the same in any (almost) other month of the year.
But at the same time, the resort will be quite warm, and the air here is always clean and fresh. With all this, there are few tourists in Pyatigorsk in May. And therefore the prices do not behave as if the place has suddenly become elite.
However, let’s take it in order!
Weather in Pyatigorsk in May
In general, it is not best suited for long walks and long trips to the Elbrus region or Dombay. Although if you are initially aware of its capabilities, you will be able to plan a wonderful and (in a good way) memorable vacation.
The beginning of May in Pyatigorsk can be quite cool. And the point is not even that air temperatures jump like squirrels, but that the atmosphere does not warm up enough during the day.
That is, of course, on some day it could be +16, even +20 °C. But in general, throughout the entire first ten days, and in some years even until the middle of the month, you should expect something in the region of +8-12 °C. Sometimes, by the way, it can be lower – around +5 °C.
May 9 in Pyatigorsk is often celebrated at +10 °C. And after this date, the sun does not show any particular desire to warm the air even to +15 °C.
At night – be prepared for this – about +6-8 °C. By the middle of the month, air temperatures after sunset can drop to +12 °C.
Let’s not argue, and at such temperatures, walking around Pyatigorsk is healthier. Although, of course, when going to a balneological resort in May, you still wait a little more heat.
By the middle of the month, the weather usually improves, and during the day air temperatures not only begin to regularly reach +18 °C, but can also exceed the +20-degree mark. And at the end of May, almost summer warmth arrives in Pyatigorsk – the atmosphere sometimes warms up to +23-25 °C.
Night temperatures, however, still don’t seem to believe that summer is on the doorstep. So in the dark, at best, you will see no more than +12-15 °C on street thermometers.
Similar “weather” occurs in Pyatigorsk almost every May – the end of spring here is characterized by differences (and significant ones) in daily temperatures from +15 to +25 °C. And, just so you know, stunning “drops” for vacationers in the range of +10-14 °C happen regularly!
Precipitation
It rains quite often in Pyatigorsk at the beginning of May, and their strength sometimes forces you to seek shelter under a roof. But they not too long. And, apparently, they have no intention of completely ruining the day (rest in general).
The average monthly precipitation is about 140-150 mm. The number of rainy days is up to 10-12.
Towards the end of spring, there are noticeably more fine days in the city. Accordingly, air humidity moves to a much healthier range of 60-70%.
But you can breathe easily in Pyatigorsk throughout the spring – this is mentioned in literally every review. This circumstance should be taken into account if you would like not only to unwind at the Caucasian Mineral Waters, but also to receive medical treatment!
How to dress
What do locals wear in Pyatigorsk in May? In fairly light jackets and, in most cases, without any insulating accessories such as hats or scarves.
But for a tourist, even if this becomes an example to follow, then his suitcase should still contain at least autumn clothes.
Because in Pyatigorsk it’s still okay, you can survive until noon, blowing on your palms, and then the sun will somehow warm you up. But there is still snow on the slopes of Elbrus and in Dombay in May!
And once you climb Moussa-Achitara (3 kilometers above sea level) in some uninsulated jeans and thin-toed sneakers, you will greatly regret it. Why, at altitudes of more than 2 km and in Karachay-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria in May, hats, as well as scarves and gloves, will come in handy.
So don’t be shy about bringing really warm clothes. And umbrellas, raincoats, and waterproof shoes will often be absolutely appropriate in May Pyatigorsk and its environs.
Don’t forget to pack sunscreen in your backpack – in the mountains you need to use it all year round. And, of course, a pair, or even two, of sunglasses – the snowdrifts in the mountains in the sun are simply blinding.
Prices 2026
A return flight from Moscow to Mineralnye Vody in May will cost 22-25 thousand rubles per person. In economy class, but with luggage weighing up to 20-23 kg.
You can also get from Mineralny Vody airport to Pyatigorsk by regular bus. But a taxi in general won’t break the bank – the trip costs up to 1-1.5 thousand rubles.
You can rent a 1-room apartment in the city center for only 3-3.5 thousand rubles per day. For a large one-room apartment or a 2-room apartment that can accommodate up to 4-5 people, they ask for 4-5 kilo rubles.
Accommodation in hotels and various sanatoriums and boarding houses is more expensive. Moreover, in the case of vacation rentals, in some cases, so much so that a sane tourist begins to doubt whether it is worth it?
But Pyatigorsk guest houses and other family mini-hotels offer quite adequate prices. And every year they move further and further from Soviet standards of “hospitality”.
Tours both within and outside the city are moderately expensive.
Things to do
At one time, we compiled a list of what you can see in Pyatigorsk in a day or two, without losing sight of anything really important.
Almost certainly, this list can become something of a guide to action in May. The only difference is that you should have a plan B in case of bad weather.
But with country trips everything is a little more complicated. Since if you can go to visit Kislovodsk and go to a concert at the local Philharmonic (for example) on any day, then it’s better to climb the Bermamyt plateau in clear weather.
Both in order not to get stuck in the mud along the way, and in order to see the double-humped Elbrus!
