Tokyo in February 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices for air tickets and hotels. What to see in Tokyo at the beginning of February and at the end of the calendar winter, where to go in Japan – says Eurotraveler.
In Russia, and in Europe in general, February is a cold month. Usually completely devoted to work, study and other useful, but not always definitely uplifting, activities.
Can we say that this is bad? Of course not, it’s a common thing – in winter it’s customary not to be distracted from routine activities.
And if you think about relaxation, then it will be in connection with some kind of skiing or sleighing fun.
What to do if this doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to add variety to everyday reality? The answer is obvious – add exoticism to your life, do something unusual and bright. For example, go on vacation to Tokyo in February!
Not only in him, of course, – having arrived in the capital of Japan, it would be a sin not to get to know her herself. However, more on that later! We will begin our story with more practical issues.
Weather in Tokyo in February
It will not require long-term acclimatization – except perhaps for that which is expected after changing several time zones. Otherwise, there are no difficulties with getting used to it – you will immediately be immersed in a reality reminiscent of the end of winter in Sochi.
And sometimes it’s even warm March!
At the beginning of February, the air temperature in Tokyo varies widely; during the day it can be from +1 (very rarely) to +6-8 (usually) degrees Celsius. Even if it is colder at night, it rarely gets to the point of frost.
It is possible to experience temperatures of about -5-7 °C in very rare years
By the middle of the last month of winter, Tokyo’s weather makes it clear that it is in a completely spring-like mood. So on some days it can be not only +10-12°C, but even +15°C.
Of course, not on a stable basis: air temperatures do not tend to stay stuck in any one range for long.
At the end of February in Tokyo it may become quite warm – up to even +17 °C. Although in most cases, of course, the reality is much more modest – it’s even better if it’s above +10 °C!

At the same time, it’s quite sunny! According to statistics, in February the probability of a clear day in Tokyo exceeds 40%.
Do you agree that this is simply gorgeous from the point of view of a traveler who intends to see as many interesting places as possible?!
The average monthly precipitation seems to be quite significant – up to 45-50 mm. But in reality, during your entire trip to Japan in February, you can basically not experience a single rain or snowfall (unless you go somewhere to Hokkaido, of course).
Since in the last month of winter in Tokyo and the Kansai region, and other areas of the country located further south, usually no more than 2-3 stormy days occur.
Worth knowing
Will you encounter high humidity? Hardly – in February Tokyo she reaches 80-85% a few times, preferring the range of 50-60%.
But a strong – in winter, naturally, and piercing – wind is typical for this area. On other days, gusts can reach 15-18 m/s.
On February 1, the sun rises over the capital of Japan at ~6.45 am and sets below the horizon at about 5 pm. That is, the duration of daylight hours is just under 10.5 hours.
At the end of winter, it gets dark a little later in Tokyo, around 5:30 p.m. And sunrise shifts to 6.15 (the length of the day reaches almost 11.5 hours).
What to take with you
Let’s start with clothes! Something light, but windproof (if it’s also waterproof, that’s absolutely fine) will be the right choice.
It is also worth paying attention to multi-layering. If you want to take off your jacket (windbreaker) on a warm day, it is important that underneath it be a sweatshirt or sleeveless vest, and not a shirt (T-shirt).
In any case, the Japanese themselves wear just such things in Tokyo in February. And, of course, a variety of coats and raincoats.

Shoes should allow you to walk for several hours without chafing your feet. And it is obvious that in our case it is better to leave winter models at home.
Instead, take with you demi-season boots and boots, sneakers, even moccasins
You can leave the umbrella at home. But an adapter plus an adapter for charging smartphones and cameras, tablets and laptops will definitely come in handy.
Because in Japan, the electrical voltage in the network is 110 V, and not the usual 220 V for Russians and Europeans. And the sockets differ from the standard ones (Type C) for most countries of the Old World.
Medical travel insurance is not included in the required package of documents for applying for a Japanese visa. But for a greater sense of security, it is probably better to formalize it.
Fortunately, the cost of the policy is completely incomparable with the total costs of traveling to Japan.
As for mobile communications, there is a high probability that your mobile phone (with a Russian SIM card and roaming enabled) will connect to Japanese operators without any problems. For reliability, you can also purchase a universal e-SIM, which provides communications (Internet package) in most countries of the world.

Prices 2026
The cost of air tickets from Moscow to Tokyo is, of course, high. But it is quite acceptable (from ~600-700 € per person round trip), considering that in fact you are going to the “end of the world”. By the way, a resident of London will pay from 800 € for a similar trip.
As for hotels, they are on average slightly cheaper than those in Beijing, for example. And Tokyo could give many European capitals a head start in terms of price.
Because for ~110-130 € per day you can rent not only a room in a good hotel, but also separate apartments (for comparison, you can check the prices in February in Paris)!
When choosing, however, it is worth paying attention attention to the presence (absence) of heating. This is a very important moment in the cool and windy Tokyo February!
We also advise you to be prepared that you will have to sleep not on your usual bed,
and on a futon, a traditional Japanese mattress that is laid directly on the floor
Very praised in reviews (quiet place!) and somewhat more expensive The Barn Tokyo. Where you will have at your disposal not only a room of “European” sizes, but also a real bed.
Tokyo public transport is not particularly expensive. Specifically, in 2026, a 24-hour unlimited pass on the local subway costs about 4.5 € (800 yen). And the cost of the trip starts from 1 € (180 yen).
But not everyone decides to book excursions in Russian – for a sightseeing tour of Tokyo you need to spend from 180-200 € on a company. If you understand English, the price tag will fall around 70-90 €… but for 1 person!

Things to do
It must be remembered that in February in Japan they celebrate immediately several holidays.

In particular, on the 3rd, the Japanese celebrate the beginning of spring, setsubun. On the 11th they celebrate State Founding Day, and on the 22nd they celebrate Cat Day.
Well, of course, there’s no escape from Valentine’s Day, the 14th. Like all over the world, in Tokyo, on Valentine’s Day, it is customary to give gifts and do (modest) madness.
Also in February (in 2026 from February 17 to March 2), Japan traditionally celebrates Chinese New Year. However, the epicenter of the festive events (“Lantern Festival”) is located in Nagasaki (Kyushu Island), which cannot be reached quickly from the Japanese capital…
As for the “traditional” attractions, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with our selection in the article “what to see in Tokyo first.” And then extrapolate what you read to the time of year and realize that at the end of winter in Japan they begin plum blossom (ume).
Where to go
You can observe this colorful, truly spring phenomenon, for example, in Kairaku-en Park in Mito (about a 2-hour drive from Tokyo).
The Kitano-Tenmangu Temple in Kyoto is also famous for its vast plum garden of thousands of trees. A city that is hard to miss if you really want to “see Japan.”
We also recommend visiting Nikko, fortunately it’s easy to get to from Tokyo. It is likely that you will want to see sacred Fuji up close – the chance that it will open to you in all its glory is very high in February.
Because yes, you should make time to visit Fuji-Hakone-Izu Park near Tokyo. Fortunately, there you can not only see impressive natural landscapes and ancient temples, but also warm up in one of the onsen located on the hot springs.
We wrote about Kyoto above – it is a must see, no matter how long your trip to the “Land of the Rising Sun” lasts. Very close to Kyoto (less than an hour’s drive) is another ancient capital of Japan – Nara.
