Abkhazia is a republic on the shores of the Black Sea, not recognized by the overwhelming majority of the world community. It was part of Georgia for only a short time; today it is trying to move on an independent course.
Which, for obvious reasons, is heavily dependent on the tourism industry – there is no industry in Abkhazia as a class. And agriculture, to put it mildly, is not intensified.
Therefore, it cannot be said that the republican economy is in a flourishing state – however, in May, Abkhazia (and in other “hot” months too) relies entirely on tourists.
And she has reasons for this, because her nature is incredibly beautiful! And the mild subtropical climate can turn a vacation on the local coast into a real event. Positive, of course…
Separately, we emphasize that Abkhaz boarding houses and sanatoriums, as well as guest houses and hotels, in comparison with Sochi, are not particularly expensive (again, they do not charge a tourist tax). And therefore they are especially beloved by travelers!
Gene memory since the times of the Soviet Union – you say skeptically. Sober calculation, proximity to entertainment in Sochi-Adler and the opportunity to arrive with an internal Russian passport – we will note prosaically.

Another important point is that during a trip to the republic at the end of spring, you will be able to replenish the reserves of vitamins that have been depleted over the winter. After all, in mid-May, Abkhazia’s own fruits are already ripening: cherries and strawberries, medlars, even apricots.
It would be a sin not to take advantage of such an opportunity. Especially considering that similar Turkish products had not yet reached the shelves of Russian stores at that moment.
You should also take into account that the rule for calculating tourist tax has recently been changed in Sochi.
In 2026, it will be equal to 2% of the cost of hotel accommodation (but not less than 100 rubles per adult guest per day, charged from April 1). But until 2029 it will grow by another 1% annually.
Weather in Abkhazia in May
Fundamentally, it is not very different from what we are used to in the south of the Krasnodar Territory. If you have ever come on vacation in Adler in May, you should have a rough idea of what you can expect.
And, by the way, there are even more palm trees and other vegetation in Abkhazia. But there are far fewer tourists – hotels in Gagra are not overcrowded in May!
This is hardly surprising – people will start to swing by July – not earlier.
In early May, both Pitsunda and Sukhumi are warm and at times even hot. The air temperature reaches +20-25 degrees Celsius during the day, +15-17 at night.
Gagra and New Athos lag behind only in small details – the overall picture is exactly the same.
That is, if you are going to Abkhazia in May, even for a one-day excursion from Sochi, you will be satisfied. Both by the weather and, with a high degree of probability, by the quality and number of (positive) impressions.
There is a lot of sunshine, there is no trace of stuffiness – a pleasant time for relaxation with the whole family. Rains are rare: in the reviews there are no complaints about cloudy days at all.
Again, we have to admit that the weather in Sochi in May is slightly cooler than in Abkhazia. Although I wouldn’t say that much!
At the end of May, the atmosphere on the coast of Abkhazia warms up to +30-32 °C by midday, and it becomes harder to breathe. But in the evenings, holidaymakers can still enjoy the coolness: by night the air cools down to +18-22 °C.
Because the trip costs a little preparerather than just throwing swimwear and towels into your suitcase. Few people seriously engage in a thorough approach to collecting things, but many people regret it later!
- What can be useful on a vacation at sea
Water temperature
You can swim in Abkhazia, if not from the beginning of May, then closer to the 10th day of the last month of spring – for sure. By this moment, the Black Sea near Gagra is almost guaranteed to warm up to +18-19 degrees Celsius.
There are exceptions. But if you rely on the worst, these are the degrees that await you.
At the very end of spring, the sea sometimes (though rarely) warms up to +21-22 °C. That is, to values that many seaside resorts in the Krasnodar Territory cannot even dream of at this time.
The optimal time for taking sea baths in May (and June too) Abkhazia, judging by numerous reviews, is midday. Because the sea is a little cold in the mornings.
And yes, despite the calendar spring, you can get very sunburned on and off the beach. Keep an eye on this!
What to take
Please note that packing for a trip to the republic is not a difficult procedure. I folded up, counted the cash (“there are big problems with ATMs there”), and off we went!
Let’s exaggerate, of course. At a minimum, you need to book a hotel ahead of time and decide whether you need to rent a car with the right to travel to Abkhazia from Sochi.

What you need to know
The main concerns, of course, are related to personal safety. But, judging by the latest reviews from Russian autotourists who have visited the republic, the main thing is not to bury yourself.
So if you are traveling to Abkhazia by car, do not go too far from busy roads and trails. Stay overnight in guest houses and hotels (ideally with a closed area or at least parking), private apartments, but under no circumstances – not in tents and not directly on the beach.
The best option, naturally, is large resorts
The calmest thing, of course, is to go to the republic for just one day with a group (of equally impatient comrades) from Sochi or Adler. But this way, firstly, you will get very tired – the trip will last 12-15 hours – and secondly, you won’t see much.
Not to mention that there will be no time to rest at all.
Therefore, the majority, after weighing everything, decides to travel in an organized manner. For example, by purchasing a package tour. Because in this case – so it is believed – the very minimum of worries and surprises awaits you.
But we note that independent travelers in Abkhazia usually do not experience no problem with the exception of purely transport ones.
And the quality of rest will be higher – a tourist who does not rely on a travel agent chooses a hotel much more pickily. And his entertainment program will almost certainly be richer.
Prices 2026
The cost of a self-planned trip also looks quite optimistic. If it takes place by car!
Since for air tickets from Moscow to Adler and back in early May you will have to pay from 27-30 thousand rubles per passenger. Plus, you also have to pay for a taxi fare from 4 thousand rubles one way to your destination (for example, to Gagra).
Against the backdrop of these figures, a trip to Sochi by private car promises significant savings. And if you go further, to Abkhazia, then… with the money not paid for the flight and taxi, you can have a good time.
Prices in hotels in Gagra in May no longer look bargain-basement, as they once did. Rather, it is a strong one, although compared to Sochi, it is still at a lower level.
If you turn your favorable attention to resort apartments, you will find that they are even more inexpensive. In particular, daily rent of a 2-room apartment in Gagra – with modern renovation and appliances – that can accommodate up to 4 people will cost 5-7 thousand rubles.
In Pitsunda and New Athos you can stay for slightly less money.
Sukhum, as befits a capital, on the contrary, is a more expensive city in comparison with Pitsunda. However, in terms of price it still does not reach Gagra.
Package tours for two with air travel from Moscow to Adler and transfer to Gagra cost from 80 thousand rubles. This amount includes both flights and accommodation for 6-7 nights, and – often – 3 meals a day.
How to get there
The plane as a whole should be clear. Arrive, take a bus or taxi, drive to the Psou border crossing or directly to the chosen resort.
The option with public transport (bus No. 173), departing directly from Adler airport and to the border, looks frankly uncomfortable. Because it has a couple of noticeable disadvantages:
Taxi: it is convenient, but not budgetary. You will have to pay from 4 thousand rubles for a trip to Gagra; a trip from Adler airport to Sukhum will cost 7-8,000.
Even in the off-season, a train runs regularly from Moscow to Sukhum once a day (the journey takes about 40 hours). Tickets for it in 2026 cost the following amounts: a reserved seat will cost 5,000 rubles per person, and a seat in a compartment will cost ~8,500 and more.
Naturally, if you manage to buy a seat on the train from Sochi, travel will be cheaper…
Car
An excellent, convenient way to get to Abkhazia, either from Sochi or from any other city in Russia. But it is not suitable for everyone – only experienced and cool-headed drivers. Our article outlines why.
A relatively recent option is to rent a car in Sochi and drive it to the neighboring republic. In terms of money, this solution looks tolerable (from 5,000 rubles you will have to pay only for the right to travel to Abkhazia), but any insurance risks abroad fall on the tenant.
Which circumstance, given the driving style of Abkhaz drivers, creates a certain pressure on the psyche.
Things to do
“Horseless” vacationers willingly go to Abkhazia with organized excursions. Pleasure in 2026 costs from 1,500 – 2,000 rubles per person.
But it presupposes a large bus and an impressive number of “like-minded people”. Who, however, do not always think the same way and want the same thing.
Individual excursions are preferable to literally everyone, including the quality of the material presented. But they cost accordingly – from 13-15 thousand rubles per trip.
If you drive your own car, there will be plenty of opportunities for interesting pastime. Although the trip itself will require skill and, most importantly, exceptional composure from the driver.
Here we simply list the main attractions region:
- lakes: Ritsa, Goluboe, Mzy, Geg waterfalls
- monastery and colossal cave in New Athos, for lovers – Stalin’s dacha
- pine forest and the ruins of ancient Pitiunt, a cathedral with an organ in Pitsunda, Gorbachev’s dacha near Myussera
- Botanical Garden in Sukhumi
Connoisseurs of abandoned buildings will certainly not miss the opportunity to climb in the ruins of Soviet sanatoriums in Gagra. Take some atmospheric photos against the backdrop of Psyrtskha station near New Athos.
