Vienna in March – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices in hotels and excursions. What to do and see in Vienna in March, where to go in Austria – says Eurotraveler.
The time for a tourist trip to some cities in the world is choose carefully. Taking into account not only your own circumstances, but also the weather – so as not to wander the streets in the cold rain or, on the contrary, not to languish from the wild heat.
The capital of Austria, Vienna, however, is not one of these cities. And she always welcomein any month and even – let’s not be afraid of this statement – day of the year!
In March, Vienna also attracts with a special atmosphere – it welcomes spring with might and main. It is at the beginning of the next cycle of revival and transformation.
Not yet shrouded in the foam of blossoming gardens, but already exuding a stormy youth energy and freshness. Very enlivening, it must be said, its beautiful, but strict, classical architecture in the full sense of the word, without frivolity.
If you are sensitive to such things, are in a romantic mood, you can afford – Necessarily go to Vienna in March. Wander through the streets and squares that are just getting ready to welcome the colorful tourist crowds, take a stroll through the parks, and take a boat ride on the Danube along the Wachau Valley.
Listen to waltzes and visit Schönbrunn, go to Viennese cafes, treat yourself to dishes of original Viennese cuisine. In a word, do everything for which tourists come to the Austrian capital.
But (probably due to a misunderstanding) they do this much later: in April and May, in the summer and in September. When a multilingual crowd is constantly buzzing and floating around. And the prices – already high – seem to be completely off the leash.
Weather in Vienna in March
He doesn’t just hint, he makes it clear with all his might that he will be sincerely glad to see your visit. How else can we interpret the fact that the air temperature in Vienna at the beginning of March very often reaches not even +12-14 degrees Celsius, but also up to +18?
Yes, of course, she does this not on an ongoing basis, but alternating with retreats to only +6-8 °C. But he does. Moreover year after year?!
In the second half or end of March, average temperatures in Vienna grow a little. And the chance of catching a really warm day, warmed by the sun to +20-22 degrees, is growing.
Although, alas, we cannot exclude “dips” when the atmosphere does not warm up even to +10 °C during the day.

Precipitation extremely insignificant — their average monthly norm barely reaches 30 mm. But cloudy days are still more likely than sunny ones – this is the price to pay for the close proximity to the Danube.
Do you really care? If you initially imagine what you can see in Vienna in 3-4 days and have drawn up a detailed itinerary, then shouldn’t. So in the reviews you will find very few mentions of what was “gray and gloomy” or “didn’t like it” or “depressing impression”.
On the contrary, the vast majority of tourists in Vienna in March experience an incredible uplifting spirit. He wanders the streets a lot, visits museums, treats himself to Viennese sweets – in a word, he enjoys life.
And how could it be otherwise – in such a grandiose city? And in a weather that not only allows, but provokes the widest excursion activity?
By the way, you will have time to do everything plenty. Because the sun rises over Vienna on March 1 at half past seven in the morning. And it sets at about twenty minutes to 6 pm (17.40) – the duration of daylight hours reaches 11 hours.
On the threshold of April day increases to almost 13 hours. And this is another reason to visit the Austrian capital in the first third of spring (during the spring school holidays, for example).
How to dress
What do people wear in Vienna in March? We may disappoint you, but not with jackets and light jackets – at least in the first half of the month.
Because the Austrians are cautious people (and the tourists for the most part have not yet arrived). And therefore you will meet people on the streets dressed in something suspicious reminiscent of winter clothes. Perhaps even wearing scarves and (at least) berets.
On a sunny and warm day, all this, of course, will be removed, left in the home closet, hung on the belt. So that the next day, not so certainly optimistic, will again be on the shoulders of their owners.
You shouldn’t really be surprised by this. Because in Vienna a cool day almost always means also dank — The Danube is nearby, and the humidity is constantly high.

If you add to this a strong wind from the north… In general, you will be glad of your weightless, but warm, windproof quilted jacket!
Because – pack your suitcase carefully on a trip. And don’t forget about warming things like sweaters and jackets.
Because you will definitely need them: if not during an evening walk around the Austrian capital, then on a trip to Semmering, for example. Or during a cruise on the Danube!
But what you definitely don’t need to take to Vienna in March are umbrellas and raincoats. Because the chance that they will really be useful to you (and save you) is minimal!
Prices 2026
Now let’s talk about a very important “matter” that turns many people away from traveling to Austria. Well, or, at least, forcing you to come and see Vienna in just a day.
We are talking about local high prices. And about hotels, which the closer to the center, the more they afford.
A double room in hotels in the Inner City of Vienna, even at the beginning of spring, costs from 180-200 € per night. And this number will be far from chicalthough perhaps quite spacious (and thank you for that).
Anyone who does not need to think about saving will be happy to live in Elegance Studios in the very center of the old city. And he will walk along it from sunset to dawn.
If, on the contrary, you know how to count money and do not like to throw it away (unnecessarily), then you will find something more democratic. For example, we save money by staying at Versava Apartments near the station (in early spring, an overnight stay there will cost 110-120 €).
Location of this guest house really excellent. Because it allows you to reach the Belvedere and then the historical center of Vienna without any problems. On the other hand, take it one day and go somewhere in Austria or even to neighboring countries.
Here is where you can quickly travel from Vienna.

As for excursions, they are surprisingly in Austria not too expensive.
A 24-hour Hop-On-Hop-Off bus ticket, for example, costs less than 35 €. And so that you don’t think it’s expensive, you can ask how much such entertainment costs, for example, in Istanbul – (spoiler – from 55 €).
A 2-hour sightseeing tour of Vienna in a group will cost only ~25 €!
For a one-day trip from Vienna to, for example, Hallstatt, which has been incredibly popular in recent years, in March you need to pay 40-55 € (depending on discounts for specific days). In the summer, for example, you will have to pay at least 70 € for the same thing.
Things to do
If during inclement or excessively hot seasons it is better go to museumsspend more time on the Hofburg collection and the chic interiors of Schönbrunn, then in March in Vienna you want to see the city itself. Admire its slender architecture and parks, walk a lot along the streets, enjoy panoramic views.
For example, you can visit the Klosterneuburg monastery, which almost became the local “Escorial”. Fans of medieval castles will not fail to visit the literally exemplary-looking Kreuzenstein.
In just 2 hours you can get from Vienna to Linz, the third largest city in Austria, visited by rare travelers. And in 2.5 hours you can get there to Salzburgthe birthplace of the great Mozart and simply a very beautiful city in the foothills of the Alps.
For lovers of difficult routes, we can recommend go to Hungary. Fortunately, you can get to its capital from Vienna in about 3 hours. And there is so much to see in Budapest in March, as well as in its surroundings!
