Venice in winter 2025/2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, whether there are frosts, how to dress, prices in hotels and excursions. What to do and see in Venice in winter, where to go in Italy – says Eurotraveler.
Winter and Venice seem to be incompatible. After all, you will agree that it is difficult to even imagine how a city standing on water can survive the classic cold season in the European understanding.
When, in theory, all the channels freeze, the sidewalks, due to high humidity, become covered with a slippery crust of ice? Are roads turning into something that’s completely scary to think about?
However, Venice took care of the latter by completely banning cars and other buses. And they are allowed to drive in just to park – in Tronchetto or in Piazzale Roma.
One way or another, the picture painted is still bleak. But fortunately, it is absolutely speculative – it is rare in Venice in winter see snow and ice. And little is known about the problems facing, for example, its northern version, Russian St. Petersburg.
Since usually in the north of the Adriatic Sea from December to February it is, if not warm, then still not too cold. And the weather in general is such that tourists do not particularly need to reschedule their visit to another time of the year.
Why, if even in winter you can see all the sights of Venice without any problems?
And then go on the Internet in search of advice – where else should I go?
Why then do travelers in winter – rare guests at the “Svetleyshaya”? For what reason does Venice really come to life only in February? And that’s only because the local carnival is an event very original and statusagain, and time-honored?

We became interested ourselves and therefore tried to clarify all these questions!
Weather in Venice in winter
In fact may be considered almost perfect from the point of view of a tourist aimed at sightseeing and long walks. Yes, it’s not too hot – but who expects that winter in Europe will be different – and due to the abundance of water often and chilly.
But it is almost deserted, quiet, and immediately sets up a romantic, slightly touching perception of reality. After all, all these houses and spiers, gently emerging through the fogs, illuminated by the unsteady and uncertain sunlight – what decoration for a fairy tale.
Moreover, it is immensely fragile, somehow magical, but at the same time absolutely realistic.
Please note, the set is not for a theatrical production. And to absolutely real journeynot a trip, but even an adventure. Which has every chance of being stuck in your memory forever.
Especially if you diversify it with some unconventional excursion!
December
The air temperature in the first month of winter in Venice during the daytime tends to range +7-12 degrees Celsius. It rarely happens lower, but street thermometers almost never show higher temperatures either.
The nights are cooler. Usually +5-6 °C, but sometimes only 2-3 degrees Celsius.
In the background almost one hundred percent humidity and the noticeable dampness coming from the canals, this weather is freezing. Those, in any case, who frivolously left warm winter clothes at home and decided to walk around in short (fashionable) jackets – I’m not going to sit still.
Frosts happen once every many years.

And the slush of snow and ice can creep across the expanses of the Grand Canal only closer to the end of winter
They say that the main transport artery of the “City of Canals” is sometimes completely freezingallowing you to build ice skating rinks right in the middle of the fairway. But it’s such a rarity that you can see it at least once in your life. kind of luck.
- Weather features in Venice in December
The sun rarely appears in the sky – usually everything is bathed in a thin veil of fog, which by midday gives way to a normal cloudy day. But also rains at the beginning of winter do not bother guests of the “City of Canals” too much.
According to statistics, only 4-6 days per month can it rain noticeably from the sky. And this is an insignificant figure when compared with the weather in Venice in November.
The sun goes down to bed early – at half past five in the evening in December it’s already eye-opening here. And walking becomes not very pleasant: the Venetian darkness, multiplied by the unexpectedly disappeared tourists (and where – they were only here?), no longer looks romantic, but even alarming.
However, it is safe to travel around Italy even alone. If, of course, you don’t go at night to places where ethnic minorities “concentrate”…
You can see what Venice looks like in early December in the video below. It’s not ours – we are lazy over and over again, if not to film something like that, then to edit it)
Venice in January
As if sharpening – the air becomes clearerbut also cooler. Tourists arriving here to celebrate the New Year even have a chance to feel the frosty breath of winter.
And not to say that they were upset – the reviews, on the contrary, filled with energy and… joy — otzyv.ru/review/212029/
Venetian January at night can remain intriguing for a long time, plunging the thermometer to almost zero. But in fact, the local weather is only occasionally surprises a real minus.
It’s usually warmer: both during the day and at night. Yes, +3-6 °C of course – not summer temperatures. But – if you dress correctly – allow you to use your time profitably.
Moreover, precipitation moderates its speed compared to December. And the sun is in the sky a little more often.

February
The month of the Venetian carnival, which here traditionally replaces Maslenitsa festivities, in terms of weather very unstable. And the air temperature can range from +10-12 °C to – again – sub-zero levels.
Sometimes the weather seems to tease, warming the air to +13-15, and on other days even up to +18 degrees Celsius. But this only happens for a very short time – it’s much colder more often than not.
And a lot. Especially in early February
Of course, the temperature does not stay stuck in negative territory – the mass of heat accumulated over the summer, the lagoon still warms the city. But sometimes even short walks around Venice at the end of winter are enough to make citizens seriously think about buying warmer clothes.
Just imagine – when the cold layers on the wet snow, and ice floes begin to float like a master between the vaporetto water buses, the thought of choosing the wrong time for the trip easily settles into your head. Moreover, for such money!
On sunny days, the colorful extravaganza of the February carnival in Venice successfully lifts your spirits. But the fact of the matter is that at the end of winter, clear periods do not happen often.
Prices 2025/2026
There is no particular point in writing about air ticket prices – after all, it is not clear where you will decide to get to Venice from. But one way or another, prices for flights in winter fall somewhat.
As for Venetian hotels, accommodation in them becomes more expensive from year to year. So even if you decide to stay in Mestre, you will not find options cheaper than 80 € per night – even in December. Of course, we are talking only about those that can be considered good without exaggeration.
In Venice proper – if you are too lazy to travel back and forth by train every day, pay attention to La Dogaressa Guest House in the San Polo area.
Excursions, in our opinion, are inexpensive, and their cost in winter Venice is reduced by 10-30%. And if not, it’s unlikely that you won’t be able to afford to spend 30-40 € for a detailed story about the history of the “City on Water”?!

Things to do
The main attractions of Venice are in demand at any time of the year. But in winter even St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palazzo not crowded with visitors.
So you can visit them, stand for a long time in St. Mark’s Square, wander through the streets, sit in cafes on the embankments with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, soaking up the flow of life. Visit the Accademia Gallery and San Giorgio Maggiore, without being crowded by anyone and avoiding standing in queues.
Visit the Frari Basilica and see the almost deserted Giudecca. Stroll along the seemingly illuminated embankments colorful houses of Buranowithout crowds of tourists, see Murano, busily choose different glass souvenirs…
In general, it is quite obvious that winter time allows you to create a more eventful visit program.
And maybe carve out time for country trips
After all, literally one day is enough for you to see the main attractions of Verona. In others, you may well visit other interesting cities in Veneto.
For example, get to Padua and visit Vicenza, or pay a visit to Treviso, which is rarely visited by tourists.
Someone will choose to go outside the region!
After all, it’s not often that a traveler has the opportunity to walk around Ferrara? A small city in Emilia-Romagna, not at all spoiled by the attention of foreigners, but extremely interesting! What is it worth alone? Castle of the Dukes of Estein whose chambers Lucrezia Borgia, famous for her morals, once reigned?!
