New Year in Kazan 2026 – how to meet? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress and what to take with you, prices for tickets and excursions, in hotels. What to do in Kazan for the New Year, what to see, where else to visit in Tatarstan – says Eurotraveler.
According to widespread belief, the New Year is a holiday that should definitely be celebrated at home, with family and friends. And although recently this pattern has shown numerous cracks – people have discovered that the New Year holidays are quite fun can be celebrated outside your home region — the number of those who travel in the middle of winter is still not very large.
Of course, you need to use this! Finding himself, if not a pioneer, then at least discovering for himself new places and directions in a fairly comfortable environment – not among crowds of vacationers.
Moreover, sometimes for this no need to put in much effort. After all, almost anyone can afford to celebrate the New Year in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan and one of the most beautiful cities in Russia.
I mean – in a financial sense!
Residents of the Volga region and, in principle, the central regions of the country will, of course, pay the least for the implementation of such a plan. And also Muscovites – the distance from Moscow to Kazan along the highway is just over 800 km.
But everyone else is unlikely to consider the proposed price too high a price to pay for the opportunity to visit Kazan during the New Year holidays. Especially if they have not been to this city before.
How much exactly does pleasure cost? We’ll tell you more about this below!
We will also tell you about what kind of weather you should prepare for, how to dress and what to take with youwhere to visit and where to go in Tatarstan
Weather in Kazan for the New Year
from our point of view, not ideal – high probability of severe frosts: up to -15 or more degrees Celsius. Which, however, corresponds to the maximum extent with the ingrained opinion of what a “real” New Year should be like.
It happens, of course, that the weather in Kazan in early January pleases with light frost down to -3-7 °C and a nice blanket of snow, giving the holiday the required solemnity and beauty.

Tourists relax by walking for hours around the beautiful Illuminated Bauman Street and Kremlin Embankmentbut without freezing. They go ice skating and enjoy dishes of national Tatar cuisine in restaurants, and go on excursions to Raifa and Sviyazhsk.
But sometimes the New Year in Kazan is marked by severe frosts. If not on the holiday night itself, but a day or two later, the city may be “covered” temperatures down to -25 and even -30 °C. Which turn long walks in the fresh air into a very dubious pleasure.
Of course, the weather doesn’t stay like this all month. But if you came exclusively for the New Year holidays, then you will be little consoled by the promise that then, throughout January, the temperature in Kazan won’t go lower -7-12 degrees Celsius.
The local climate at the junction of December and January paints a similar – usually quite frosty “picture” with great pleasure
So if you want to comfortably celebrate the New Year in Kazan, and even do it with children, don’t plan a long trip. 3-4 days will be quite enough!
Humidity is usually very high, up to 80-90%. Which also makes us pay special attention to planning entertainment events – if you dress lightly, then even with a slight disadvantage you can completely freeze.
In general, during this period, precipitation does not get on your nerves too much. However, sometimes it snows are abundant.
Precipitation and sun
So you’ll almost certainly be walking through snowy streets. In other years, there was so much snow in Kazan before the New Year holidays that reviews began to write that the services could not cope with cleaning the streets.
The number of clear days is large – for the entire duration of the holidays there may be count up to 4-5. But you are unlikely to be very happy about this, since the sky at this time of year and in this place becomes cloudless only in severe frosts.

The length of daylight is modest – at the beginning of the month it barely exceeds 7 hours and only at the end it reaches 8. On January 1, dawn in Kazan occurs after 10 am, and the sun sets around 6 pm.

How to dress
The issue of choosing clothes for a trip must be approached very responsibly. Strictly tell yourself that you shouldn’t expect a “European” winter in Tatarstan and stock up lots of warm clothes.
Thin quilted jackets that you may have (once) sported in Prague or Vienna on New Year’s Eve are best put aside this time. And come to Kazan to celebrate the New Year in a thick down jacketsheepskin coat or even a fur coat.
Putting on your feet not designer boots or boots with thin soles, but something less stylish, but more radical, designed for severe cold. Scarves and mittens (not gloves – remember the humidity), substantial woolen hats and thick socks will definitely come in handy.
With a high degree of probability, other insulating things will be used. Something like: pullovers and sleeveless vests, sweaters and sweatshirts. In case of long trips out of town, it will not be superfluous to set of high-quality thermal underwear.
Prices 2026
The cost of a ticket for an adult passenger on a night train from Moscow to Kazan and back on December 28-29 ranges from 5-6 (reserved seat) to 10-12 (compartment) thousand rubles. Flights with luggage on a designated route on New Year’s dates will cost significantly more – 16+ thousand rubles per person.
Traveling from Moscow to Kazan by car in winter is not fun for everyone, even taking into account the presence of the M-12 toll highway. Although we won’t argue – such a solution to the “transport issue” will help save money if 2 or more people are traveling.

Hotels in Kazan are expensive – this is due to interest from tourists and increased demand. So, expecting to rent something decent around the New Year for less than 9-10 thousand rubles for a couple of people is simply naive.
We recommend considering the offer of a good apart-hotel Rush In Aparts Gayaz, located in a nice mansion at a distance of about kilometers from Bauman street. Recent reviews note the convenient location and cleanliness of the rooms, and one even calls the hotel a place “where you would like to return after a long walk around the city.”
The Prague Club Hotel has everything, except good sound insulation. It is located 300 meters from the entrance to the Kozya Sloboda metro station. That is, just one stop from Kremlinskaya and the city center itself.
But the rise and a rush of good mood will cause the range and cost of excursions around Kazan. After all, for an amount of about 1,200 – 1,500 rubles, you can take part not only in an intense bus and walking trip, but also take a ride on a Ferris wheel, for example.
Or after the excursion, take part in a tea party and try national Tatar delicacies.
The cost of country walks also deserves praise. In particular, you need to pay for participation in the excursion to the Raifa Monastery and Sviyazhsk less than 2 thousand rubles…

Things to do
Decorating Kazan for the New Year is one of the priorities of the regional authorities. And judging by numerous reviews, they don’t spare money on this.
Moreover, some even claim that in terms of festive decorations and illumination, the capital of Tatarstan will give odds to Moscow itself. Not to mention (apparently money-saving) Western Europe)
You can check for yourself whether these comparisons are appropriate in modern conditions. But in any case, there is no doubt that the center of Kazan will be festively litand you will walk through it with pleasure.

Perhaps you’ll go ice skating later, not on the streets, of course… Decent-sized skating rinks in the capital of Tatarstan filled annually. And, by the way, one is located on the Kremlin embankment, right next to the Palace of Farmers.
In addition, you should definitely explore the main attractions of Kazan. Not only visit the Kremlinvisit the museums located there (free admission on the first Tuesday of every month), the cathedral and mosque, but also take a promenade or two along Bauman Street.
Few tourists would miss the chance to take a selfie near fabulous looking Ekiyat puppet theater. Or, weather permitting, take part in a long excursion around Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda.
A piece of Kazan that has preserved the atmosphere of bygone years…
Where to go
We wrote above about country trips to the Raifa Monastery and Sviyazhsk – these two places are on the list of “must-sees” even in winter. But as for Yoshkar-Olawhich not so long ago and suddenly greatly improved its tourist rating of the capital of Mari-El, then not everyone will get there on New Year’s holidays.
First of all, because of the distance – Kazan and Yoshkar-Ola are separated by about 140 km. Which, in harsh winter weather, not everyone wants to overcome.
However, there are available bus excursions that last a whole (10 hours) day…
