Tokyo in March 2026 – is it worth going to Sakura? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices for air tickets and hotels. What to see in Tokyo and Japan in March, when sakura begins to bloom, says Eurotraveler.
You may have heard that the best time to go to Japan is in March. Because this month is the maximum chance to catch the cherry blossoms.
And – by observing the process – understand the Japanese soul
On the one hand, this is true. Although in the south of the country sakura begins to bloom in February, and in the northern regions of Japan it does so only in mid-April.
On the other hand, there are certain nuances. Which can even convey negative “tones” to the trip.
Don’t believe me? Do you think that the delight of such an exotic trip will not be overshadowed by any everyday “little things”? Your right!
Just remember that (usually) in Tokyo, cherry blossoms bloom in mid to late March. And famous parks and gardens where entire forests of Japanese cherry trees grow (Ueno Park, Eastern Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Shinjuki Gyoen) crowded Japanese citizens who came to participate in the hanami.
And this participation does not imply any “stay for a short time and move on”, not at all! It’s natural outdoor picnic — on the lawns you will see a lot of people sitting for a long time.
And the paths in the parks are so densely packed with people walking that it is completely unclear how to “admire” in such an environment. Not to mention trying to find peace of mind.
However, there is a way out. And, as indicated in a very informative review of Tokyo in March, it is simple, like everything ingenious – walk not where everyone else is – irecommend.ru/tokio-vzglyad-iznutri.

Well, we move on!
Weather in Tokyo in March
There is every chance you will like it. Since she is distinguished by pleasant from the point of view of a northerner, air temperatures and not such a small number of sunny days.
Already in early March, Tokyo can be so warm that it’s time to start walking around in light jackets – by midday the atmosphere can warm up up to +15-17 degrees Celsius. Although air temperatures within +10-14 °C are more traditional for this time.
The nights are naturally colder: it can be as low as +4 or +6-10 °C
Even before the middle of the month it can warm up to +18-20 °C; in other years (but rarely) it can reach +22-24 °C. Although about stability no need to talk – after a short period of almost May warmth, a long period of much colder weather suddenly sets in with temperatures no higher than +12 °C.
Likewise, the end of March does not promise anything particularly surprising in Tokyo. Although, of course, tourists will be happy with regular daytime temperatures of +16-18 degrees Celsius.
The probability of a clear day is noticeably reduced compared to February. Although, according to statistics, up to 10-12 sunny days are recorded in Tokyo during March.
The average monthly precipitation is significant – up to 70 mm. So this is your chance to catch during your trip 1-2 rainy days quite big. However, there will almost certainly be more partly cloudy skies.
Will you experience high humidity? Only sporadically, during heavy rains. On other days she lives in the range of 40-60%.
Wind gusts also become weaker compared to February. ‘Cause you can don’t get too warmeven when going on a long walk.
On March 1, the length of the day in Tokyo is about 11 hours and 25 minutes. On the threshold of April it increases by more than 1 hour (over 12.5 hours).

What to take with you
How should you dress in Tokyo during March? Not too warm, but at the same time carefully!
After all, openly warm days at the beginning of spring quickly give way to very cool ones here.
In our opinion, waterproof windbreaker with hoodplus some kind of fleece sweatshirt as a second layer would be the right choice. Allowing you to prepare for any vagaries of the weather, and not sweat if the weather suddenly clears up.
It is quite possible to take with you on a trip to Japan in March even slightly lighter, almost summer things. In any case, they were useful to us.
Isn’t it nice to walk through a blooming garden in something elegant? And it’s better – also bright, uplifting to yourself and those around you?!
It’s difficult to get by with just one set of shoes. Because you will probably need not only comfortable sneakers or moccasins that allow you to walk for a long time, but also something waterproof.
Perhaps even completely rubberized. At the beginning of spring in Tokyo and Japan in general, you can encounter natural downpours!
It’s quite possible take an umbrella with you. Well, or buy this accessory directly in the “Land of the Rising Sun” – isn’t it a good gift for your loved one?!
From practical things
we also recommend taking with you adapter for charging smartphones and cameras, tablets and laptops. It will definitely be useful to you and adapter.
After all, the standard voltage in Japan is 110 V, that is, it is half the usual 220 V for Russians and Europeans. And the sockets in most Japanese hotels are simply not suitable for Type C plugs standard in most countries of the Old World.
Medical tourist no insurance required attach to the package of documents for applying for a Japanese visa. But for your own peace of mind and a greater sense of security, it is worth registering.
Moreover, the cost of the policy is very low and is simply lost against the background of the overall costs of travel.

As for communications, your mobile phone (with a Russian SIM card and roaming enabled) will almost certainly connect with any Japanese mobile operator without any problems. You can also play it safe and purchase a universal e-SIM with an Internet package, available in most countries of the world.
Prices 2026
Nobody would call the cost of air tickets from Moscow (for example) to Tokyo cheap. But in general, in March it is acceptable (from ~55 thousand rubles or from 550 € per person round trip), if you remember that you are actually going very far.
A similar trip from European capitals: London, for example, or Berlin, will cost an even more impressive amount.
Tokyo hotels cannot be called terribly expensive either. In general, their rooms cost about the same as their Beijing counterparts, despite the fact that they live in a communist country.
At the beginning of spring, a couple of independent travelers will be able to rent a room in a good hotel in Tokyo for 110-150 €. In particular, we strongly recommend the slightly expensive, but excellent The Barn Tokyo.
TokyoNEST Nippori flaunts much more modest sizes, but also more affordable prices. This hotel is located close to Nippori Station, which will be greatly appreciated by travelers arriving in Japan via Narita Airport (it takes only 40 minutes by train from the airport).
Again – half an hour’s walk from the hotel you will find Ueno park with cherry blossoms and Tokyo National Museum.
Public transport in Tokyo itself is not particularly expensive. In particular, in 2026, a 24-hour unlimited metro pass costs about 4.5 €.
Excursions to Tokyo are not cheap – for a sightseeing walk around the city with a guide you need to spend from 130-150 €. However, this is not for one, but for all participants!

Things to do
It must be remembered that March 3 in Japan is celebrated as a spiritual, although still unofficial “Girls’ Holiday” (hinamatsu). Very bright and exotic from the point of view of a representative of Western culture.
On this day, Japanese families with girls display richly dressed dolls representing the imperial family and courtiers on a special multi-tiered stand.
As for the girls themselves, on March 3 they also dress up in kimonos and try (should, in any case) behave in an exemplary manner. So that everyone understands how well-educated and generally happy the family raising them is.
On March 3, most Japanese traditionally spend time with their families.
Also, in some places they still perform an ancient ritual, sending dolls (hina-nagashi) on a straw boat down the river to the sea. Thus, getting rid of all troubles and misfortunes…
As for the more famous attractions of the Japanese capital, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the list of the most important in our review of “what a tourist can see in Tokyo in 2-3 days.” And then plan your own route…
Where to go
For our part, we advise you to find a day to go to Nikkofamous for the Toshogu Shrine – it can be quickly reached from Tokyo.
There is little doubt that a tourist will want to see up close Mount Fujia true symbol of Japan. And if you don’t go up (the official climbing season is July-August), then at least take a walk in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu Park.
Very picturesque and full of interesting “highlights”: temples and hot springs, onsen
Naturally, we should not forget about Kyoto — you must visit the ancient capital of Japan, no matter what month your trip takes place. To see its famous temples and the “Golden Pavilion”, walk through the exemplary Japanese gardens, visit the castle of the all-powerful shogun Tokugawa Iyaesu – to really unfold, a couple of days will not be enough.
Next door to Kyoto (an hour away by train) is another former capital city of Japan – Nara. Where people come mainly to pet and feed completely tame deer in the city park.
Well, marvel at the power of Todai-ji Temple, which once held the title of the largest wooden building in the world.
