Abkhazia in March 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather in Gagra and Sukhum, reviews, air temperature, what to dress, prices for hotels and tours. What to do and what to see in Abkhazia in March, where to go first – says Eurotraveler.
In some places spring comes early, in others it comes late. What motivates people living where it comes late, go where she arrives early.
As a result, someone ends up in Abkhazia in March. Among the palm trees and in view of the mountains, under the blue sky and a noticeably hot sun, on the shore of a joyfully shining sea, surrounded by wildly blooming mimosa.
In a word, where life flows calmly and as if not at all concerned. And the atmosphere itself is saturated – no, not only with sea iodine and the vibes of mountain forests – but also with peace.
Do you doubt that you need to go there, and if you do, you won’t be able to get out? But we have no doubt – we need to go there and we can.
For example, immediately after several days of relaxing holiday in March in Adler. A not-so-expensive treat: skip the plane and train and travel south by car!
Deciding on this is not easy. But getting to Abkhazia even from Moscow by car is not difficult. Although, of course, this requires a certain composure and driving skill…
Weather in Abkhazia in March
It turns out guaranteed better than that onewhat you will discover at the beginning of spring in Moscow. Although, of course, it won’t be so good that you immediately want to go to the beach, strip down to your swimsuit (swimming trunks), and then cool off in the sea.
The air temperature in Abkhazia in early March, whether in Gagra or Pitsunda, Sukhum, tends to be in the range above +10 degrees Celsius. Sometimes it can drop to only +5-7 °C, but clearly reaches +12-15 °C.
Closer to the middle of the month, for several days it may even be +18-20 degrees (and +22-24 in the sun – don’t you want it?).

And yes, at such moments, visiting tourists are stuck on the beach like lizards. With pleasure and spending hours absorbing energy of the southern sun faces pale and as if tired from a long and cloudy winter.
A temperature drop to +10-12 °C is completely possible. And yes, if you are unlucky, it will last not a couple of days, but a whole week.
However, this never changes the fact that in Abkhazia at the end of March it gets warmer, the weather becomes more sunny. Both in Gagra and Pitsunda, both in New Athos and Sukhum, day after day in the shade a very encouraging +15-18 degrees Celsius is recorded.
We don’t know whether information about night temperatures in Abkhazia in March will be useful to you? Maybe just to understand why it’s so bad in the morning chilly and even dank!
Because yes, at night even in Gagra, the warmest resort in Abkhazia in March, there may beIf it’s 0 degrees, it’s even a slight minus. And not only at the very beginning of spring, but also in the second half of its first month.
When daytime temperatures already clearly signal the onset of warm weather.
Sun
March 1 rises over Abkhazia at about 8 a.m. and sets at about 7 p.m. What does the length of the day give? more than 11 hours (part of this time on a cloudy day will be “eaten up” by morning and evening twilight), allowing you to plan fairly long routes.
At the end of March, the duration of daylight hours in Abkhazia increases to almost 13 hours. The sun rises over Gagra at 7 am and sets at almost 20.
Precipitation
Now about sad (crossed out) not the most pleasant! The fact is that March in Abkhazia is quite bad time. Not “oh horror”, of course, but with more frequent rains compared to winter, or even April.
On the coast, up to 120-130 mm of precipitation can fall in a month. And yes – that’s a lot.
So the chance of encountering 2-3 rainy days during a trip to Abkhazia in March for 4-5 days is really great.

But – to be fair – you will definitely find sunny weather. If not the whole day, then at least part of it.
A very detailed, colorful, photo-rich review describing a trip to Abkhazia in early March can be found here – forum.awd.ru/viewtopic.php?f=1466&t=410518.
It should be taken into account that snowfalls are also possible in the republic in the first half of the month. On the coast, however, the matter will almost certainly be limited to wet snow, which will not lead to the formation of snow cover (air temperature is +10 and above – usually).
In the mountains, near Lake Ritsa, you can find decent snowdrifts. Although the lake itself, of course, will not freeze. And she will flaunt her bright turquoise color as if nothing had happened.
What to take with you
As it must have already become clear to you, in Abkhazia in March it is better to dress warmly. Not a down jacket, probably, if you are not going to spend too much time sitting, but clothing that allows you to stay warm even if you move quite actively.
Thermal underwear and various wind and waterproof sleeveless vests and jackets with hoods especially in demand. Those who are not going to wait out the rain in a hotel room should definitely take raincoats with them.
Umbrellas will most likely get in the way on this kind of trip. Because in spring-style Abkhazia you need to leave your hands free.
How to take a good photo or video. So also in order to have something to catch on a slippery path or path.
Particular attention should be paid for shoes. Insulated and waterproof boots with soles that don’t slip too much on slippery surfaces are the best you can think of for a March trip to these parts.
However, if you decide to independently see those places in Abkhazia that are located on the coast and are easily accessible, you can limit yourself to sneakers.
It might be worth taking with you swimsuit and swimming trunks. For example, in order to try the same Kyndyga thermal springs. Or warm up not only your face, but also the rest of your body on the beach.

Prices 2026
We mentioned above about traveling to Abkhazia in your own car. And yes – today this is the most inexpensive, although labor (and time) consuming way to get to Gagra and Pitsunda, New Athos and Sukhum.
The cost of air tickets – if you buy them not on the eve of departure, but 2 months before it – does not seem to be very shocking. For flights from Moscow to Sochi and back in early March, you need to pay from 21-22 thousand rubles in the baggage-free version and from 27-30 thousand if you want to take some things with you in your suitcase.
For a room in a hotel or guest house in Gagra, a couple of travelers in March (for example, on the 7th-8th) will pay from 1.5-2 thousand Russian rubles. A separate apartment, quite possibly spacious, will be rented to you for 3.5-4 thousand per day.
You can book a room in a good guest house in Pitsunda for 2.5 thousand rubles. And renting an apartment costs only 2!
Prices for excursions around Abkhazia start from approximately 1,000 rubles if departing from Gagra. If you decide to settle for a one-day bus tour to Lake Ritsa or to New Athos from Sochi, then you will need to pay from 1,500 – 2,000 rubles for this kind of trip.
Things to do
March is a great time for active recreation, especially in Abkhazia. Even if you just want to bask sluggishly in the sun, making up for the (possible) lack of vitamin D, make an effort – commit a couple of trips around the republicadmire its beauty from afar.
You can start with Gagra: with walks through its Seaside Park and photo sessions against the backdrop of the Colonnade. Lunches or dinners in the atmospheric Gagripsh restaurant, visits to abandoned buildings, long hours on the seashore.
From Gagra it’s simply a sin not to go to Lake Ritsa. Along the way we saw other interesting places like the Stone Bag and the Chobgar cornice, the Blue Lake.
It wouldn’t hurt to visit Pitsunda – take a walk along the sea, breathe in the pine phytoncides. And just an obligatory thing – trip to New Athos.
Just keep in mind that due to Lent before Easter, the New Athos Monastery may be closed (on some days). And then you will have to limit yourself to a cave and a park, ascent to the Anakopia fortress.
You can simply walk around Sukhum: around the city and the embankment, enjoying the warmth (let’s believe) and the solitude. Active citizens can get to the Kyndyga springs and bask in the hot baths.
Well, or go to Tkuarchal and Akarmaru. Which on a gloomy and stormy day look like an illustration for some horror film.
