Kazan in May 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature and rain, length of day, how to dress, prices in hotels and excursions. What to do and what to see in Kazan in May, where to go in Tatarstan – says Eurotraveler.

The idea of going on a trip at the beginning of May is actually not on the minds of so many people. Indeed, despite two rounds of holidays, the number of official days off is not so large that they can be used to create a full-fledged vacation.

However, someone manages to do it. Moreover, in some cases, a little is needed for a trip – only 2-3 free days.

And today we will talk about one of the cities that is perfect for a trip of this format. We will talk about Kazan in May.

Because the capital of Tatarstan seems to be ideally suited to the role of destination “day off”. We are talking both about Muscovites, who can get to Kazan by car in a few hours, and about residents of other Russian cities!

Briefly

1. Is it warm in Kazan at the end of spring? Usually yes – at the end of May the weather in the city sets in with temperatures above +20-22 degrees Celsius. But in the first two decades of the month, options are possible: both heat up to +28 °C and downright cold days
2. How to dress in Kazan in May? Let’s answer this evasively – depending on the weather. Which one day can be as hot as summer. And in another it will remind you of cool March
3. What to do in Kazan in late spring? We will advise walk the streets a lotvisit museums, be sure to take a cruise on the Volga. Well, it would be nice to go somewhere in the vicinity of the capital of Tatarstan – why not by boat?!

Well, now – more details!

Weather in Kazan in May

It really can surprise. Especially those who know for sure that Tatarstan is actually quite cool region. With very harsh winters and extremely late springs.

But in other years, even at the beginning of May, the air temperature in Kazan reaches mind-blowing values of +26-28 degrees Celsius. With no less probability, however, it may be exactly the opposite – not only +8-10, but even only +5-7 °C.

And for a number of days.

All this will tell the attentive observer a lot. Namely: stability is clearly not about the climate of Kazan in May. Although if you are a lucky person in life, you can try to “skim the cream.”

Permanent ups and downs temperatures are typical for the weather in Tatarstan throughout May. Although in its second half you can count on more warmth.

Because the columns of street thermometers not only stretch, but in many cases exceed the +20-degree mark. And at the very end of May, air temperatures above +25 °C are often recorded in Kazan.

The nights are colder. And often – a lot!

Until the final ten days (more likely even several days) of the month after sunset, air temperatures drop into the range of +4-10 °C. Although on other nights it can reach +12-15 °C.

Precipitation and sun

It rains no more often than in April, that is, very moderately (the average monthly precipitation is about 50 mm). Yes and chance of a cloudy day still exceeds that of a sunny day.

But the length of daylight hours is growing at an accelerated pace. And if on May 1 in Kazan it is light for about 15 hours and 20 minutes, then by the beginning of the calendar summer this period increases to 17 hours.

Not a bad gift for an active traveler? Someone who knows exactly what you need to see first in Kazan?!

What to take with you

It is not possible to unequivocally answer the question of what people wear in Kazan in May. Because one day you will see people everywhere in maximum light summer clothes. And in another, you will wonder whether you actually saw it or just imagined it?!

Therefore, we recommend taking with you on your trip a sufficient amount of, if not warm, then at least windproof and even waterproof clothing. And dress in layers, like cabbage.

It started to get hot, so the top layers were removed. It got colder – put back on everything you had.

It will definitely come in handy, especially at the end of the month, to wear hats that can protect you from the scorching sun. We also advise you not to forget to take with you on your trip to Kazan in the second half of May sunglasses. And even a cream that can protect your skin from sunburn.

Yes, that’s right. Although Tatarstan is by no means a southern region, you can easily and very quickly burn out here at the end of May. Especially on the open deck during a boat tour along the Volga.

Prices 2026

Alas, it’s difficult to do anything about this – at the very beginning of May, in the capital of Tatarstan there is a jump in hotel prices. Often so significant that tourists planning to come can dream of a time machine and the “good old” past.

In large hotels, especially those located near Bauman Street or not far from the Kremlin, renting a room for the May holidays will cost at least 12-15 thousand rubles for two per day. And the small ones seem to be competing with their “colleagues”, who will ask for more.

There is, however, a way out of such a situation—which, to be honest, simply turns me off from traveling. And it is called private studios and apartments.

You can rent a good apartment in Kazan, equipped with all the equipment necessary for a comfortable stay. for 6-7 thousand rubles (8-10 thousand for 3-4 people).

Most likely, the apartment (studio) will not be in the city center. But at a distance that is quite manageable while walking. Again, there is a metro in the capital of Tatarstan.

Air tickets from Moscow to Kazan and back at the beginning of May cost from 16 thousand rubles per person and his hand luggage (with luggage – more expensive). You can buy round-trip train tickets for 5-9 thousand rubles – respectively, for a reserved seat or a seat in a compartment.

And finally, about excursions – they are in Kazan not too expensive. Participation in a group sightseeing bus tour will cost 1,300 – 1,500 rubles. For 2,200 – 2,500 rubles you can go out of town: see the Ecumenical Temple and Sviyazhsk.

  • Inexpensive apartments and studios in Kazan for daily rent

Things to do

Obviously, in fairly warm and mostly dry weather you are tempted to do a lot of walking and driving. Moreover, in Kazan and its environs quite interesting placesthat are worth seeing at least once in your life.

The first to open the hit parade of local attractions is the squat, snow-white Kazan Kremlin. Erected in the 16th century by Pskov craftsmen and simply perfectly preserved.

Inside the Kremlin you can visit not only the Annunciation Cathedral and the Kul-Sharif Mosque, but also a number of museums. The main one, of course, is the Hermitage Center. Within the walls of which, until July 2026, there is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures from the collection of the Yusupov princes, loaned by the St. Petersburg Hermitage – kazan-kremlin.ru/yusupovy-roskosh-skvoz-veka-iz-sobraniya-ermitazha/.

Surely in May you will want to see in Kazan Bauman streetA. Well, just look at it – walk along it a few times. And be sure to stroke the belly of the Kazan Cat, a bronze sculpture that has been a kind of symbol of the city for a couple of decades.

Few people will miss the chance to climb to the observation deck on bell tower of the Epiphany Cathedral. In the literal sense of the word, it is simply an eyesore of a brick structure that miraculously survived the era of the construction of communism.

Families with children may want to go to a show at the Ekiyat Puppet Theater (poster here – afisha.yandex.ru/kazan/theatre/places/ekiiat). And they will almost certainly visit the Kyrlay indoor amusement park, located right on the banks of the Kazanka River.

Where to go

In the surrounding area you can pay attention to Temple of All Religions in the village of Staroye Arakchino. Believers will probably get to the Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery.

Literally everyone, regardless of age, should take a trip to the fortified city on the island Sviyazhsk. Built at one time as a base for the assault on Kazan.

To the south of the capital of Tatarstan you can visit Bulgarian Museum-Reserve. Nestled on the banks of the Volga in a very interesting place – where the capital of Volga Bulgaria once stood.

Is it worth going to Yoshkar-Ola (about 140 kilometers from Kazan)? Maybe!

If you have a day left for such a trip. And you won’t be fed up with impressions yet (you won’t spend all the money allocated for the May holidays).
