How can Russians apply for a Schengen visa?

How can Russians get a Schengen visa? in 2026? To Spain or France, Italy or Greece, Germany: required documents, amount of consular and visa fees, how to avoid refusal? Is it possible to apply for a Schengen visa on your own, without intermediaries and “helpers”, the chances of success – Eurotraveler talks about all this.

In the pre-pandemic era, Russians often went on vacation to Western Europe. Fortunately, this was easy and simple to do, since obtaining a Schengen visa has become something of a formality.

In a case where the chances of a favorable outcome were very close to 100%. And the cost of this very visa was, if not ridiculous, then small.

Then, but not now – today, obtaining the cherished Schengen visa has turned into a tedious and quite expensive procedure. In case of a successful outcome, it promises very little – a single-entry visa for the dates of travel or with a short temporary corridor.

The “lucky ones” can count on double entry, and almost no one can count on multiple entry (more than 2 times). Regardless of whether you decide to obtain a Schengen visa through an intermediary or feel the strength to apply for it yourself.

Yes, that’s right, hiring a holder of “secret knowledge” that allows you to get what you want and even more, practically doesn’t increase the chances for success. Of course, professionals usually working in this field know how to correctly fill out an application for a Schengen visa, and will also tell you what documents and certificates need to be provided.

But! Often they want to get so much for such help that it is easier to contact a visa center. And it’s not difficult to prepare documents for a (successful!) visa application on your own.

So, what you need to know and collect. Let’s talk!

Schengen countries

The Schengen “zone” includes 29 states. Obtaining an entry visa to any of them automatically gives the right to enter other countries that have joined the agreement.

The current list in 2026 looks like this:

France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Malta, Greece, Portugal, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Italy, Estonia, Liechtenstein, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia.

Note that countries such as Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Finland, and the Czech Republic no longer issue tourist visas to Russians. But in 2025, Germany, which was considered not too loyal in this sense, a country.

Brandenburg Gate - Germany began issuing more Schengen visas to Russians

And visas are still being issued en masse by Spain, Italy, France and even Greece. Traditionally the most popular countries among Russian tourists.

The percentage of disapproval of applications in 2024 decreased to 7.4%, in 2025 it should be about 8-9%.

Note that today you can go on holiday to Cyprus with a Schengen visa. Although its absence will not spoil plans to sunbathe on the beaches of Protaras or Limassol – if you have a Cyprus national visa in your passport.

Worth knowing

You should not necessarily apply for a Schengen visa to a country that (according to reviews) now issues them most readily. For example, at the time Finland, Russia’s northwestern neighbor, was traditionally considered such. Today, France is probably considered the most loyal.

It must be taken into account that the so-called “rule of first entry” is perhaps the main thing that people pay attention to at the border checkpoint. That is, if you are planning to enter, say, Germany under the French Schengen visa (without indicating this in the application form when submitting documents), the result may be a “turn away” right at the airport of arrival. And immediate cancellation of the stamp.

Thus, apply for a visa exactly where you are going to go. Even if you have to transit through other countries to get to your destination!

The absence of an official job or even being unemployed is not a reason for despondency. It is important for the consulate to know that you are sufficiently solvent. And a bank statement or even a card is perfect as proof.

The only thing is that the money should be deposited not 2 days before the visit to the consulate, but a little earlier. Consular officials should not suspect that you borrowed the required amount specifically to apply for Schengen.

Speaking of the amount: it is recommended to calculate the required amount based on spending about 100 € per person per day.

By car

Alpine Road - Italy issues single-entry Schengen visas

In 2026, this paragraph is no longer relevant – if we are talking about traveling in a car with Russian registration plates.

Until 2023, in order to obtain a visa and travel around Europe in their own car, Russians had to prepare a fairly detailed itinerary in advance. Write it (it could be by hand) and attach it to the application for all travelers.

It was also required to provide copies of documents for the car (registration certificate) and driver’s license (national! – remember the Vienna Convention). Plus printouts of reservations for ALL hotels where you planned to stay during the trip

International car insurance, the so-called “Green Card,” could not be obtained if a visa was requested long before the planned trip. But starting in 2022, the set of required documents also includes a copy of the insurance policy.

Reservations and insurance

Hotel and airfare reservations for the specified dates of the first trip must be provided when submitting the application. They often require paid reservations, which obviously increases the financial risks of potential travelers (for example, they paid for non-refundable air tickets and hotels, but were not given a visa).

In addition, the consulates of some EU countries ensure that hotels do not change after receiving a visa.

For example, if you apply for a visa to the Czech Republic or Germany, and then, let’s say, cancel your hotel reservation (you found a cheaper one), you should notify the consulate about this. Because hotels, for their part, will almost certainly do this.

Medical insurance in the amount of 30 thousand euros per person is required. When submitting documents to some countries, the policy must be valid from the date of submission of documents, not entry (this point must be clarified at the visa center).

The processing time for Schengen visas in 2026 can reach 45 days or even more.

Much depends on the country where you are going to go. Greek diplomatic missions, for example, review applications and make a decision within 2-3 weeks. While Italy may “give birth” after your plane has taken off.

And this is not a figure of speech – in 2024-2025 there were enough such cases!

Documents for visa

  • 2 color photographs measuring 35×45 mm, taken no earlier than 6 months before submission
  • 2 copies of the application form in the established form (we paste one of the photographs)
  • international passport, the validity of which expires no less than 3 months (90 days) after the end of the trip
  • General passport of the Russian Federation plus copies of the first spread and registration page
  • a certificate from work confirming your salary, or other proof of financial solvency (account statement, sponsorship letter). Children will need a stamped certificate from a kindergarten or school. Students from other educational institutions
  • Most consulates require cross-notarized consent from parents for the departure of children (we will clarify). It is better to make such consents valid until the children reach adulthood – so as not to have to go and pay again later. Well, yes – we attach it to the package of documents copynot the original!
  • booking a hotel or apartment: both Booking and Airbnb are suitable
  • air or train tickets (optional – ferry). Previously, it was possible to attach a copy of a driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate, and the route of the intended trip – in case of a road trip
  • travel health insurance for Schengen countries with a coverage amount of at least 30,000 €

For all citizens over 12 years of age, fingerprints are required when applying for a Schengen visa. This will have to be done once every 5 years.

What is the price

The consular fee for a Schengen visa in 2026 is 90 €. Sometimes you can pay it directly when submitting documents in rubles at your own rate established by the consulate. Or at an ATM located on the territory of the diplomatic mission.

Accredited visa centers at consulates charge 25-40 € per person for assistance in preparing a set of documents and filling out the application form, taking fingerprints, and incredible efforts to submit.

Firms offering visa services set their own prices. Which in any case will not be lower than 50 € for a set of documents.
