Bodrum or Marmaris – where is the best place to relax?

Bodrum or Marmaris — what is better to choose for a vacation? Weather, water temperature, prices for tours and hotels, entertainment, transport accessibility. In what months to go on vacation to Bodrum and Marmaris, the main differences from the resorts of the Turkish Riviera are in the Eurotraveler review.

It is well known that a significant, that is, directly prevailing, number of tourists visit Turkey for the purpose of relaxing at sea. Moreover, the resorts in the south of the country are in greatest demand: Antalya and Kemer, Belek, Side and Alanya.

It is reasonably believed that it is warmest there. At the same time, in reviews you can not often find mention of high humidity. Capable of greatly overshadowing or completely ruining the vacation of a not at all small category of resort guests.

Frightening phrases like “cooked in its own juice”, “incredibly stuffy” and rather innocent ones – “the towels never dried” – briefly characterize one of the climate features on the Turkish Riviera.

And therefore, meticulous travelers, accustomed to weighing everything and choosing “visually,” turn their minds to other Turkish resorts. Where the weather is not so violent.

For example, on the coast of the Aegean Sea. That is, exactly where Western European – in particular British – holidaymakers especially like to land their tired bodies. And so do the Turks themselves!

However, even at the selection stage, a potential vacationer faces a snag. Because deciding where it is better to relax: in Bodrum or Marmaris is not so easy!

Weather

If we compare the air temperature, we can state almost complete parity. Because even in the peak summer months it will be hot here and there, but still not too hot.

And air temperatures are around +30-35 °C against a background of low humidity tolerated tolerably the vast majority of potential tourists. If, of course, they leave briefly shaded or, even better, air-conditioned spaces during the day.

In all other cases – for example, when walking or even on water cruises and excursions in the Aegean Sea – the power of the sun will be fully felt. And the desire that will prevail among others is to find shade. And even better – a breeze or a chill)

In Marmaris, perhaps, the heat does not weigh so heavily on the psyche. Because, as has been noted many times in reviews, this is a garden city!

  • The presence of extensive pine forests in the vicinity of Marmaris has an extremely positive effect on the air. It is not as dry as Bodrum. And that’s why it’s a little easier to breathe here
  • Rain in summer is a rare occurrence in both of the resorts studied. But in the fall, Marmaris theoretically looks like a much more rainy place.

The weather in Marmaris is best for a holiday in autumn

Which, however, is completely offset by his “green lungs”. If in Bodrum you can easily notice the scorched earth and withered bushes, then his “colleague” was luckier in this regard.

Enough hard to feel critical differences in weather at designated resorts outside the high season. For example, if you come to Marmaris or Bodrum in October, when the “golden autumn” begins there. That is, the weather becomes equally “velvety”, not hot and very pleasant.

The sea water temperature at both resorts, even at the peak of summer, rarely exceeds +26-27 °C. Which gives someone reason to even complain about the coolness. Most vacationers, on the contrary, are extremely happy that the sea is refreshing!

Here is the best time to go to the seaside in Turkey.

Beaches

Bodrum’s city beaches are narrow and crowded with holidaymakers during the season. It is for this reason that experienced holidaymakers most often settle in places outside the city limits. This is especially true for families with children – the children will simply feel uncomfortable digging in the sand on the narrow ribbons of the Bodrum beaches themselves.

In the suburbs, it’s easier to find a sparse stretch of coastline. Although many complain about sometimes too many tourists.

It’s difficult to call the problem with beaches completely critical. Because transport links between Bodrum and its “satellites” are excellent. And the cost of a ticket for dolmus – this is a Turkish “minibus” – will be affordable for the most low-budget tourist.

Near Bodrum there are such popular beaches as Bitez and Yakhshi (to the west) and Torba (to the north, on the other coast of the peninsula). Akyarlar and Karaincir are located noticeably further away.

It’s interesting that

Beaches of Marmaris

few are impressive within the city limits. That is, they are impressive, of course, but in a negative sense. Dirt and unkemptness, some questionable purity of the water – these are the main complaints.

But as soon as a tourist gets out or, say, settles at least in Icmeler, his feelings improve. Although, judging by the reviews, in recent years this beach for some reason has become much worse cleaned.

If vacationers get to the hotel in Turunc, then everything will be fine today. Because this beach remained “cool” and “clean”. And the sea remains clear throughout the high season!

Entertainment

Bodrum is an ancient city. That is, it is downright ancient – under the name Halicarnassus it existed even before the campaigns of Alexander the Great. And it was not a village – the army of the great commander was able to defeat the local fortress only the second time.

Alas, the legendary Halicarnassus Mausoleum, one of the “Wonders” of the ancient world, is now a chaotic pile of stones. They say that this is where fantasy comes to life… but that’s all.

You can visit the remains of the city gate and sit on the steps of the ancient Greek amphitheater. And also wander with interest for a couple of hours around the well-preserved fortress of St. Peter, which the resort inherited as a legacy from the Knights Hospitaller. However, evil tongues confidently claim that the fortress today looks too “new”.

The symbol of the resort is dilapidated windmills. Whose top hats stand proudly on the elevated peninsula between Bodrum and Gümbet. From there, by the way, the entire area is clearly visible.

What else? We’ll list the promenades along the cozy streets of the old city as definitely enjoyable activities. Visually strongly reminiscent of Greece.

Young people will definitely like Bodrum nightclubs and discos – this resort seems to be considered an all-Turkish champion in terms of their number.

Where to go from Bodrum

Boat trips around the surrounding extremely picturesque bays are also available. Those who can afford to enter the Schengen zone also enjoy visiting the Greek island of Kos.

Does not have any special attractions. With one exception – a cozy rural aura has been preserved here and the impudent breath of an ever-hurrying civilization is not felt at all.

They actively carry people from Bodrum and on long-distance excursions. Particularly popular is the one that goes to the town of Dalyan (“Turtle Beach” and Lycian Tombs). During the summer season, buses heading to Pamukkale are not empty either.

Here you can read about what you can see on your own in Bodrum.

Marmaris

there is little answer to all of the above. The local fortress, in terms of color, plays in the “you don’t have to visit” category. And the city is much more modern. And it can compete with its rival only in terms of convenience for shopping and the number of cafes.

Sedir is especially well known. An island that unofficially bears the name of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra.

In the vicinity of Marmaris you can paraglid among the wooded hills. And of course, various trips on boats and yachts along the coast are very popular. Plus – sea fishing.

Some holidaymakers can and do go to the Greek island of Rhodes. Which is not just larger than Kos, but also much more interesting in an architectural and historical sense.

Transport accessibility

This aspect is of more interest to those tourists who are considered independent. Because packages are simply loaded onto tour operator buses after passing through passport control.

Bodrum is closer to the airport in Milas, the distance is 35 km. This advantage is partially offset by the fact that only summer charters fly directly there.

Individual travelers often have to plan a route with a transfer in Istanbul. Which, however, is also not bad – in the largest city in Turkey there is something to see.

Marmaris is served by an airport in Dalaman. And it is a priori further away – 85 km along the highway.

Moreover, air tickets there, if purchased independently, are for some reason more expensive than to Milas. So some vacationers arrive through it. And this is already 120 km.

Prices 2026

All other things being equal, package tours to Marmaris are slightly more expensive than to Bodrum. What does a little mean? On average – by 10 percent.

Is the overpayment worth the stated benefits in the form of a slightly more gentle climate and very fresh and fragrant air? Everyone here decides for himself.

Moreover, everything is quite sad with the attractions in Marmaris. Although the Turks themselves definitely consider it a much better place for a seaside holiday.

When preparing your trip yourself, you can choose a direction that interests you personally. By constantly monitoring prices, purchasing relatively inexpensive plane tickets.

Here our favorite in terms of inexpensive accommodation in the center of Bodrum is Bodrum Sade Pension. As for Marmaris, here we vote for Turunc – Lale Otel looks like almost the ideal (inexpensive) option for accommodation.
