In the understanding of the majority, the country of Montenegro is small, but conveniently located on the Adriatic coast. beach holiday destination. All other entertainment and educational activities traditionally come as a “trailer”, only shading the main ones: swimming and tanning.
That is why the hot summer months of July and August are traditionally considered the best months to visit the Balkan state. Some holidaymakers have tried a different time and purposefully go on vacation in Montenegro in June. And a very small one – in May, the end of spring is considered not a very suitable time for the opening of the swimming season on the Adriatic.
What about the beginning of autumn, you may rightly ask? Will it be possible to have a good rest and swim in Montenegro in September, or is the beach season already ending?
And the most you will have time to do is admire stunning imagination natural landscapes and take one or two educational excursions? To Kotor, for example, or to Lake Skadar?
Below we will give you a detailed answer to these questions. Let’s also consider price – in 2026 it may play a key role!
Weather in Montenegro in September
In many ways it is reminiscent of one of the seaside resorts in Italy at approximately the latitude of Rome. Therefore, when you find yourself in Budva or Tivat in September, you will not immediately understand that summer is already over. Because the only difference, in fact, from the hottest months of the year is that the sun goes to “sleep” earlierbefore you get the idea to leave the beach.
The air temperature in Montenegro at the beginning of September (on the coast and in Podgorica – in the mountainous areas it is much cooler) sometimes rises to +30 and even +32 degrees Celsius, but usually prefers a range of +26-28 °C. The nights are noticeably colder – after sunset, street thermometers drop to +18-22 °C.
There is no doubt – many tourists, in view of such forecasts, do not see the need to warm themselves. Even in the evenings I continue to wear T-shirts and shorts!
But those who travel with children or know their ability to freeze even at +20, of course, take care of jackets.
The air temperature in Budva and Tivat, Herceg Novi will be approximately the same as was said in September. In Bar and Ulcinj, and partly Petrovac, the atmosphere can warm up even more thoroughly during the day.
It will be equally hot in September in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. But on the other hand, the temperature differences there are more significant – at night it can get colder up to +16 °C.
In the third decade, that is, towards the end of September, coastal Montenegro often experiences significant cooling: up to +20-24 °C during the day and +16-18 °C at night.
The elevated northern territories of Montenegro welcome autumn much earlier. So in Zabljak (Durmitor) and Kolasin, already in mid-September, daytime temperatures do not rise above +15-18 °C.
Precipitation
It will rain noticeably more often than in summeralthough almost never for a long time. And in principle, there is a chance to observe exceptionally clear and dry weather during the entire 7-10-day vacation.
Cloudy days are definitely not a priority. However, once again – rains for Montenegro in September are far from nonsense. Towns on the coast of the Bay of Kotor, for example, are sometimes watered like buckets.
After a day or two of dry weather, heavy irrigation may occur again, often accompanied by thunder and lightning. Take this aspect into account if you decide to spend your holidays in Herceg Novi, Perast or Tivat, in luxury hotels on the Lustica peninsula.
In other resorts of Montenegro: in Budva and Becici, Petrovac and Sutomore, Bar, rains in early autumn not so abundant. Although purely statistically, the average monthly precipitation differs slightly (70 versus 80-90 mm).
Thunderstorms in Montenegro are truly luxurious, both in autumn and even in winter. Lightning discharges over the mountains or the sea in the evenings and at night illuminate everything for kilometers around…
Water temperature
The Adriatic Sea near Montenegro in September warms up to +24-26 °C. And then it loses the accumulated degree very slowly.
In any case, you will be able to swim in September in Bar, Budva and Tivat at any time of the day without restrictions. Only in the afternoon hours, trying to hide in the shade as much as possible – the sun is incredibly hot.
Starting from the middle of the month, the water area gradually cools down. And by the time October arrives, the temperature of sea water everywhere drops to +21-22, rarely +23 degrees Celsius.
Some would even call this water cool. Well, yes, Montenegro is not Phuket or Cuba. But, you see, it’s a little naive to expect more when you go to the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the fall?!
Prices 2026
At the beginning of autumn, young couples like to come to Montenegro for their honeymoon, as well as people of pre- and retirement age, who are in any way or rather indirectly connected with the new school year. Students and families with children are, understandably, not the most frequent guests at local resorts during this time period.
Thus, the tourist wave subsides, and with it the prices. Not much at first, but already from the 10th of September you can count on significant discounts.
Even in Budva, which is generally an overly promoted resort, everything is getting cheaper, and you can rent a room in a modest guest house for ~€50 per day. If you stay a little further along the coast, for example, in the town of Kamenovo, then for €70-75 you can rent an entire apartment for three…

Tours around the country with guides are sometimes quite expensive. Which is a little surprising when you consider that the distances in Montenegro are not particularly long.
However, for €70-90 a group of like-minded people can take part in a sightseeing tour of Budva or Kotor.
Having laid out from €40, the tourist will go on a 3-hour excursion around the Bay of Kotor. And by paying from €85-90, you can take a one-day trip to Durmitor Park, the Tara River Canyon (without rafting) and the Ostrog Monastery.

They are basically positive and form a strong desire to go and participate. If not in long swims along the coast, then at least in walks and hikes – interesting places in Montenegro are only small in number at first glance.
At the same time, you have every right to count on a significant bonus. After all, the number of tourists in Montenegro is rapidly declining throughout September. This is understandable: children go to study at schools and universities, and parents have to control the process.
Things to do
So, it is in September that there is an excellent opportunity to thoroughly and without fuss explore the old town of Budva, stroll around Kotor, and evaluate the fitness potential of the “City of a Thousand Stairs” of Herceg Novi. Climb Mount Lovcen and visit the Ostrog Monastery, see with your own eyes beauty of Durmitor National Park.
Connoisseurs of ecotourism can take a walk in the mountains when the heat has noticeably subsided – there are a lot of marked trails here.
For example, a hike along the crest of the low Vrmac ridge between Kotor and Tivat will leave vivid impressions. And a more difficult (and dangerous) foray into the Prokletije park on the border with Albania will be remembered forever.
Those who claim that Montenegro in September is literally created for active recreation, hiking, sightseeing visits. Therefore, do not focus only on beaches and seaside towns – take the trouble to plan your route and allocate money for all kinds of trips and excursions.
Where to go
Particularly active and not shying away from car rental are trips to neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina (to Sarajevo and Mostar) or Serbia (to Belgrade from Budva ~ 530 km, to Novi Sad – about 600 km). Although one day will obviously not be enough to travel to the designated countries.
Those who have a Schengen visa or a country passport that allows visa-free entry into Croatia will have a slightly more interesting leisure time. After all, in this case you can take a one-day excursion to the incredible Dubrovnik.
Perhaps the most well-preserved city on the Adriatic, with the possible exception of Venice!
