Baku in September 2026: weather, reviews, water temperature in the Caspian Sea, is it possible to swim, how to dress, what to take with you? Is it worth going on vacation at all, prices for air tickets and hotels. What to see in Baku during September, where to go in Azerbaijan – says Eurotraveler.

September, as a growing number of Russians are beginning to realize, is not just the first autumn month, but also a very beach month. Which, with the help of very simple manipulations with vacation dates, can be turned into the main holiday time of the year.

And not necessarily relaxed and completely “seal-like”. On the contrary, in many places both in Europe and Asia, the arrival of autumn includes a “green light” for excursion and educational tourism.

And getting 2 interesting opportunities at once instead of just one (try going on excursions in the summer heat of +35 degrees and above) is not just an interesting, but also a directly beneficial experience. And a chance that we personally always tried to take advantage of!

So why don’t you come with us in September to… Baku. First virtually, and then in reality?!

After all, you can practically not prepare for this kind of trip with documents (Russians only need a foreign passport). And the expenses awaiting you are not at all prohibitive. We would even dare to say that they are comparable to those that you will incur in early autumn while relaxing in Adler or, say, in Kislovodsk.

Weather in Baku in September

It could easily qualify for the title of summer somewhere in Northern or even Central Europe. The only difference is that there are more sunny, dry days in the capital of Azerbaijan in the fall than in Prague.

At the beginning of September, Baku often experiences temperatures of about +30 °C, and sometimes even +35 °C. This “greetings from summer” usually doesn’t last long, for a week.

Then the street thermometers start showing something from the range +24-27 °Cmuch more satisfying for a tourist who loves to walk and look.

However, you shouldn’t relax too much. Because throughout September the weather in Baku is full of surprises in the form of +30 °C and above. And only by October the sun slows down, and by midday the air begins to warm up to a maximum of +18-24 °C.

Night City - Baku is a must see in September

The nights are cooler, but just enough for you to catch your breath after a hot day. That is, if it was +30 °C, then after sunset you can count on +25 °C.

There is no reason to wait for frosts. Yes, even temperature dips below +20 °C occur no earlier than the third ten days (in fact, at the very end) of September.

Precipitation is so rare that it can be considered a statistical error. During the entire first month of autumn, 1-2 light rains may occur in the capital of Azerbaijan. Moreover, the average volume of water poured out (10-15 mm) allows you not to even think about umbrellas, not to mention raincoats.

The sun on September 1 rises over Baku at the beginning of seven in the morning, and sets below the horizon at 19.15 – the duration of daylight hours exceeds 13 hours. A month later, the luminary performs exactly the same procedures half an hour later and 50 minutes earlier.

Which obviously allows you to plan extremely interesting and eventful leisure time. Moreover, in the evenings, magically illuminated Baku is incredibly beautiful.

Water temperature

Let’s dot all the i’s right away – you can swim in Baku in September! Not in it itself, of course: the main beaches are located on the Absheron Peninsula, 35-40 kilometers to the north.

It is curious that some experienced tourists initially settle in the resort village of Bilgah or in a hotel in Mardakan. And from there they make forays both to Baku and to other interesting places in Azerbaijan.

This is reasonable: took a swim in the morning (in the sea or pool) – and on excursions!

With the arrival of autumn, the Caspian Sea near the coast of Baku remains warmed up to +26-27 °C. And even by October it cools down only to +22-23 °C.

This should not be surprising – the depths near the shore are insignificant. And those who want to swim rather than splash around will have to move a considerable distance away from the edge of the surf.

You can swim in the Caspian Sea in Baku in September

It should be taken into account that in Baku all year round strong winds are blowing. So swimming in the Caspian Sea may not be possible due to high waves.

The same cannot be said about a beach holiday in general – it should be a great success in September. As rightly mentioned in the reviews, do not forget to take sunscreen and clothing that covers your body as much as possible on your vacation to the Caspian Sea. The local sun even in autumn bakes pale-skinned northerners very quickly.

What to take with you

As is clear from the information above, you are unlikely to need umbrellas and other waterproof accessories. Warm clothes will equally uselessly take up the useful volume of a vacation suitcase – a light jacket may not hurt, but more substantial clothes it’s better to leave at home.

Instead, equip yourself to the maximum with light dresses and trousers, breeches and shorts, T-shirts and shirts. In addition to sandals and sandals, don’t forget to bring moccasins or shoes for evening outings.

For those who intend to take country walks, visit mud volcanoes and similar remarkable places, sneakers or boots will do no harm.

As for visas, they are for Russian citizens to enter Azerbaijan not required. All you need is a valid passport, which will allow domestic tourists to stay in the country for up to 90 days. Those who arrived for up to 15 days are also exempt from the obligation to register at their place of stay – azerbaijan.mid.ru/o_registratsii_inostrannykh_grazhdan_na_territorii_azerbaydzhana/.

The situation with the notarized consent of the parents (parent) in the case of a trip of a minor child is not entirely clear. So, if he is traveling with his grandparents, other relatives, or a guardian, it will definitely be needed. But opinions vary as to whether this document is needed if a child is traveling with one of the parents.

Here, for example, it is indicated that “no, not needed” – ut2.spb.ru/notarial/foreign-countries.php?content=Azerbaijan. But airlines and tour operators, on the contrary, believe that “yes, take it with you.”

Perhaps because it’s easier for them – they don’t have to deal with the issue of transporting passengers who were refused entry…

Tourists are not required to have medical insurance at border control. And by the way, you can only fly into Azerbaijan in 2026 – literally.

Since the country’s land borders (at least for Russian tourists) are closed. At the same time, you can go to Georgia, for example!

MIR cards issued by VTB can be useful in Azerbaijan only for withdrawing cash from the ATMs of the mentioned bank. The conversion service (ruble-manat) costs 3% of the amount.

Prices 2026

An air flight, for example, from Moscow to Baku and back will cost 35-37 thousand rubles, if you can limit yourself to only hand luggage. If you need luggage, you will have to pay about 7-8 thousand in total.

Which you (perhaps) will be useful in the future for traveling on public transport in Baku, including the metro. Read more here – airport.az/ru/transport/aero-express/.

Please note that not so long ago it was possible to purchase a card and deposit funds onto it only with cash. So it’s worth stocking up on at least a small amount of Azerbaijani currency in Russia.

As for the prices for accommodation, you can’t help but like them – for €60-70 per day you can rent a good apartment not just within walking distance, but right in the city center. Moreover, for this amount up to 3-4 people can live in a spacious apartment!

If you want to stay in a hotel that has no serious shortcomings and is perfectly located, you will spend even a little less. However, this is only for two.

For example, MidCity Hotel (8.9), located a kilometer from Icheri Sheher and not far from the lower station of the funicular to Nagorny Park in early autumn, asks about €50 per night for a modest room for two. An “amazing breakfast” for two people is included in this price.

The cost of excursions is also reasonable – for a large-scale historical tour of the city lasting 4 hours you will pay about €20-25. A one-day trip from Baku to Gobustan, to mud volcanoes, the Fire Temple and Yanardag will ruin you for about 30-40 euro coins.

Things to do

Those who are planning to mainly concentrate on a beach holiday should know that there is a really large entertainment center for the whole family near Baku – Dalga Beach Aquapark Resort. As is clear from recent reviews, it is not without certain shortcomings, but still remains the largest establishment of its kind in Azerbaijan.

Some seaside hotels (Bilgah Beach) also have their own smaller water parks.

It is quite natural that in September you will want to see Baku. Because when should you do this if not in sunny, but not excessively hot weather?!

The symbol of the capital of Azerbaijan, the “Flame Towers”, that is, their illumination, is most impressive at night. Therefore, don’t be lazy to take an evening promenade along Primorsky Boulevard or get to the observation deck in Nagorny Park. Which is rightly considered the “ideal place” to see the whole of Baku.

You can also look at the city from above by visiting the Ferris wheel near Primorsky Boulevard. A ticket for this entertainment costs about 10 manats.

The main historical attraction of the city is the old city of Icheri Sheher with the remains of fortress walls and towers, as well as palace of the Shirvanshahs. Visually, the Maiden Tower is also very impressive, a mighty fortification, as if shrouded in a sad legend.

We advise you to visit the local Fountain Square and try some traditional Azerbaijani dishes in a restaurant there. Surely you will not miss the main local pedestrian street Nizami, lined with beautiful houses and replete with shops of international brands.

Where to go

In the vicinity of Baku, it is better for a tourist to go on a tour – this way you can see literally all the significant places in 1 day. Visit the Gobustan National Park, wander among mud-squelching volcanoes, literally see the flaming Mount Yanardag and the pink salt lake Mazasyr.

There is no doubt that you will definitely be taken to the Ateshgah Temple, the sanctuary of fire worshipers. This place, where flames burst out of the ground, is considered sacred by Zoroastrians.
