Venice in September: weather and reviews, air and water temperature, how to dress? Is it worth going on vacation, prices 2026 in hotels and on excursions. What to do and what to see in Venice during September, where to go in Veneto and Italy in general – says Eurotraveler.
Even those who know almost nothing about Venice, deep down, vaguely realize that you can go to this city at any time of the year. Without being at all afraid of being disappointed due to the lack of vivid impressions.
However, it is no secret that some periods are more suitable for such a trip, and some less so. Thus, most reviews advise not to go to Venice in November, due to the high probability of heavy rains and floods. And the time from December to early February is rightfully considered low season in the “City of Canals”.
But in the summer and even in May, “La Serenissima” never ceases to attract tourists. Yes, Venice is downright gorgeous in September!
As for the weather, which in terms of warmth and abundance of sunny days is not much different from its summer version. So based on amount of extraordinary entertainment. After all, held in early autumn:
- Venice Film Festival
- Historical regatta on the Grand Canal
traditionally attract many curious people.
Maybe it will attract you too? And really, you don’t want to participate?!
Weather in Venice in September
Exclusively or simply fits well both for walks and excursions, and for beach holidays. Since daytime air temperatures during at least the first half of the month rarely leave the range of +25-27 °C.
At night, however, it is noticeably colder – after sunset the atmosphere quickly cools down to +17-20 °C
In some years, September in Venice turns out to be too hot. And for at least the first half of the month, tourists no longer think about which attraction they should see today, but about searching for coolness.
It’s actually like this:
The sun on days like these burns incredibly. And only the relatively low humidity of 65-75% makes existence bearable…

Most city dwellers spend this time on urban and suburban coasts. And the best beach resorts in Italy, like Lido di Jesolo and Caorle, which are geographically close to Venice, are literally crowded with vacationers.
During the first couple of weeks of autumn, almost it doesn’t even rain. Although the average precipitation in Venice in September is generally about 80-90 mm (that’s a lot!) And the number of cloudy or rainy days reaches 7-8.
Note that after the 20th of the month it usually (but not always!) becomes a little cooler. Daytime air temperatures move to the range of +22-24 °C, and nighttime temperatures sometimes drop to +14-16 °C.
This allows you to enjoy a particularly leisurely and completely tireless walk around the city. Isn’t it nice to walk surrounded by such beauty and not rush anywhere (into the shade)?
As October approaches humidity also increasesit reaches 80-90%. And this should not be surprising – in the second half of September it rains in Venice on a regular basis.
How to dress
From all of the above, it is clear that there is no need for warm clothing. However, when going to the shores of the Venetian Lagoon at the beginning of autumn, you should still put in your suitcase:
- windbreaker with hood
- sweatshirt.
Both the first and second have a chance to come in handy during an evening walk on the open deck of a vaporetto water bus. Or a leisurely cruise along the canals on the same gondola – near the water, and even in the evenings – it’s much cooler.
Don’t forget about hats, which will help prevent heat stroke. And summer clothes with long sleeves that can prevent sunburn.
Also worth taking on a trip to Venice in September:
- sunscreen and the same glasses
- swimwear: swimsuits, swimming trunks and beach towels.
Water temperature
It is worth keeping in mind that the Adriatic Sea near Venice in early September warms up to a respectable +23-24 °C. And you are almost certainly want to take a swim!
You can do this on the other side of Lido Island, which has a string of good sandy beaches. So it is in the immediate vicinity of the “City of Canals”.

In particular, in the resort of Lido di Jesolo, which we already mentioned above (long sandy beaches plus a large water park). Or even a little further northeast, in Caorle, which is only accessible by Italian tourists.
Towards the end of the first month of autumn, the water in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea cools down to a modest +20-22 °C. Which will not satisfy all holidaymakers.
Moreover, at the end of September and beginning of October you can swim in Sicily. And almost certainly: in Campania and Calabria.
Prices 2026
They just don’t soar into the skies – the cost of apartments and hotel rooms in Venice in the first half of September is almost at maximum levels. As a result, a couple of people will have to pay from 170 € per day of accommodation. This does not include taxes and fees (1-5 € per day depending on the hotel category)!
It is worth understanding that for the above amount:
- staying in the center of Venice – in San Marco – will not work. Most likely, accommodation in San Polo will cost a little more (options are possible here, however)
- but (if you look in advance) you can find a double room in the areas of Cannaregio and Castello, on the island of Giudecca.
In principle, you can find an inexpensive hotel on the Lido (we recommend Sea Tower Torre Telemetrica). With views of the sea from the rooms and close to the cinemas where the premiere screenings will take place.
The decision to settle on the “continent”, in Mestre, from where to Venice proper promises distinct savings. drive about 10-12 minutes. There we advise you to pay attention to the not particularly expensive – from 120 € per night for two in early September – and well located Hotel Delle Rose.
The hotel has easy access to both Marco Polo Airport and Venice (tram line T1). There is also a supermarket nearby where you can buy all the food you need for breakfast or dinner.
Those planning to visit Venice in 2026 should remember that the city has introduced an entry fee of 5-10 € for day tourists (who do not have hotel reservations).
- September dates, however, are not yet considered popular and “hot”.
- And therefore are not subject to additional fees – cda.ve.it/en/ .
As for the cost of excursions, it is not prohibitive. For example, for a contribution of 40 € you can take part in a walk through “non-tourist Venice”. Participation in a guided walk around Murano and Burano will cost approximately the same amount.

Things to do
Above, we briefly mentioned the historical regatta in Venice on the first Sunday of September – regatastoricavenezia.it/en/. Witnessing this event is like being among the chosen few. At the same time, look at the colorful show it is possible and completely free!
The rest of the possibilities are outlined in our fairly compact material dedicated to what you can see in Venice in a few days. Not only top attractions are mentioned there – we also recommend visiting in person some little known churches.
Visit a place like Squalla di San Rocco, which is not mentioned in passing by all guidebooks. Try to find something like nirvana on the completely non-tourist island of Giudecca.
And in Dorsoduro, with its wonderful canals and cozy embankments, the very minimum of tourists – something that is difficult to find in San Marco – tranquility and incredible feelingdeep happiness.
Be sure to visit the island of Torcello. Which, apparently, is the cradle of Venice
We also recommend getting to Burano. Yes, devote not 1-2 hours to it, but at least half a day.
On the island of Murano you can see not only the Glassblowers’ Quay or the Glass Museum – this large island is incredibly cute and beyond the main tourist “paths”.
Where to go nearby
While the program of events in Venice itself at the beginning of autumn will (guaranteed) be busy, you can also plan a trip or two around the famous city.
You will almost certainly not regret it if you go to see Verona in 1 day in September. A chic city filled with light and a lot of interesting sights.
It makes sense to get to Lake Garda. In which, at the beginning of autumn, the high season is still ongoing – in the most beach sense.
Few tourists consider it possible to spend time exploring Treviso. Even though it is through the airport of this city that many of them arrive in Venice.
Very few travelers plan to visit Vicenza. A large, but clearly neglected city in Veneto.
And it’s completely in vain – Vicenza is a kind of open-air architectural museum. And a city that is clearly different from most of its kind in Italy.
