Karelia in September 2026 – is it worth going? Weather in Sortavala and Petrozavodsk, water temperature in Lake Ladoga, is it possible to swim and how to dress? Prices for tours, excursions and hotels, what to do and what to see in Karelia in early autumn, whether there are mushrooms and what about fishing – in the Eurotraveler review.
Karelia is a northern region of Russia. This circumstance must be constantly kept in mind by those who are exploring the possibility of holidaying in the republic, even in the summer. And if you are planning to organize a trip in the fall, assessing the climatic features of the region should be at the forefront.
For every new year in September Karelia appears absolutely different.
When: cold and completely unsmiling. Constantly striving to be doused with an icy shower and in the mornings shrouded in an alarming and chilly fog. In a word, it clearly does not consider itself an amazingly beautiful place, one of those where it is worth relaxing in Russia in September (although in fact it is).
In other years, Karelia enjoys sunny, warm weather in early autumn. And it’s as if he’s admiring own charm in the motionless mirror of forest lakes, the Ladoga skerries dearly loved by tourists.
She dresses up as a bright beauty, illuminated in all shades of warm ocher. Not rich in the southern way, but lyrical, very refined and tender, a little sad.
And in September, Karelia is often overflowing with mushrooms and even berries (lingonberries and cranberries)! So, when you go for a walk in the forest with only a small basket, you may be very upset that you didn’t take a larger container!
Is it possible to guess for sure what type of Kareli you will see in September? We don’t think so.
And the study of meteorological statistics from past years gives a clear answer to the question. After all, consistency is not the strong point of this region!
Weather in Karelia in September
Let’s describe it using the example of southern Sortavala – in the north of the republic it can obviously be much colder. And in the capital Petrozavodsk, which is 250 km to the east, the climate is not for the better.
Therefore, on a September trip, for example, to Kizhi Island on Lake Onega, it is worth taking more warm clothes. What are we talking about – at this time of year it is better to go to Sortavala and the Valaam archipelago not only in a T-shirt.
However, it is better to never go to Valaam wearing only a T-shirt…
One way or another, the first month of autumn in the northwestern region of Russia usually does not shock with any cool meteorological surprises. The air temperature in southern Karelia in early September during the day ranges from +14-21 °C. Although at night it can drop to +8-10 °C, if not even lower, snowfalls also occur in the north of the republic.
Towards the middle of the month the weather goes over to the side of evil becomes noticeable cooler. And in most cases after sunrise you can expect a maximum of +10-12 °C. In other years it can reach +18 °C, but this is an exception to the “rules”.
By the end of September in Karelia, the average air temperature completely drops to values that anywhere in Sochi can only be called winter. During the day – no higher than +6-8 °C, at night – regular frosts.
As an exception, the climate can present a gift of +10-12 °C.
Do sunny days happen often? According to statistics, not much!
That is, you can count on average 7-8 per month. And not perfectly clear, but from the middle to the half, partly cloudy.
On the one hand, this is good, because a sunny day in Karelian autumn in most cases brings with it a specific cooling. On the other hand, it’s bad. Because the gold of the local forests can only truly amaze you on a fine day.
It rains regularly, and sometimes quite heavily. According to statistical calculations, it is better to walk around the region for at least 6-7 days in September with an umbrella or a raincoat.
How to dress
An insulated windbreaker will obviously be in demand. And a thick sweater has every chance to air out.
Is it worth taking with you? rubber boots? This seems like a smart move, even if you don’t intend to wander through the woods looking for mushrooms.
Because otherwise, trips to Karelian waterfalls, not to mention visits to skerries, where every second person goes on a boat trip, can end with wet feet.
Water temperature
In Karelia, even in small lakes in early September it reaches, at best, +17-18 degrees Celsius. Which, if it does not exclude swimming completely, then makes it the lot of very few citizens.
In the same Lake Ladoga and Onega, by the onset of autumn, the water area is usually warmed up only to +15-16 °C. And it cools down rapidly.
Is fishing good in September Karelia? Judging by the reviews on specialized forums, – not particularly!
On sunny and cool days, the fish gather in schools, bite poorly, and move away from the shore. But it takes the bait quite readily when it becomes cloudy, warm and rainy outside.

Prices 2026
Today you shouldn’t count on outright cheapness – the republic’s popularity among tourists is growing. And it is regularly “discovered” by new groups of travelers. Moreover, families come here to nature especially willing!
Therefore, in fact, in the region you can rent not only a room in a guest house, but also a cottage for a large group. In the latter case, this same company, by the way, is unlikely to go bankrupt – renting a house will cost 10-14 thousand rubles per day.
You can also easily stay in an apartment in Sortavala. And from there, make study tours around the region.
A little lower general price level for accommodation in the capital of Karelia, Petrozavodsk. Where do those who come to Karelia by car from Moscow and the central regions of Russia usually start their journey from?
In particular, staying in a well-maintained hotel will cost 5-7 thousand rubles for two per day (we recommend Greenfeel Petrozavodsk with small but very cozy rooms). Simpler guest houses will rent you a room for 3-3.5 thousand.
Well, yes, in Petrozavodsk you can rent an apartment, that is, apartments. Just for one day and for quite reasonable money even for poor travelers – 3-4 thousand rubles.
2-3-day tours around Karelia with a rich cultural program and accommodation cost from 25 thousand rubles per person. A one-day excursion to remarkable places (for example) near Petrozavodsk will cost 3-4 thousand.
Things to do
Even if for some reason you do not include in the program of “must-see” places the Kizhi Museum-Reserve on Lake Onega and the Transfiguration Monastery with monasteries on Valaam, which is very easy to get to from St. Petersburg, there will be something to see in Karelia.
Like the same Ruskeala park, which you definitely need to get to by retro train. For it is absolutely unreasonable to neglect the possibility of a ride on an almost pre-revolutionary train.
Natural attractions
Obviously not everyone will get to Vottovaara, probably the main magical place, the sacred hill of the Sami and Vepsians. Although it is one of the most interesting places in Karelia.
Due to the impressive distance – Vottovaara is located 230 km northwest of Petrozavodsk. Yes and lack of a normal road at the finish line.
Usually only domestic UAZs and “loaves” dare to storm the climb to a certain limit. And few people dare to destroy expensive imported equipment in the local ruts.
Despite this circumstance, we recommend including this point in your route. After all, September Vottovaara, framed by foliage beginning to turn golden, is literally a magical sight.
- Is it worth going to Karelia in October?
By car you can get to the village of Gimoly. Further only on foot (35 km) or by car of local residents.
White Bridges Falls or Yukankoski Falls are not among the most visited. Perhaps because it is about 60 km from Sortavala and as much as 200 kilometers from Petrozavodsk.
But Kivach and Girvas, located, respectively, 85 and 100 km north of the Karelian capital, are popular even outside the high summer season. And especially at the beginning of autumn!
On the way to Karelia by car from Moscow, you can visit the town of Staraya Ladoga, where a fortress allegedly founded by Rurik himself lives and lives.

Memorials
We advise you to get to Medvezhyegorsk (165 km). A small town whose name is inextricably linked with some of the most tragic pages of Russian history.
Indeed, in the vicinity of this “bear corner” there is creepy tract Sandarmokhwhere at the end of the 20th century, burials of thousands of prisoners of Stalin’s camps were discovered without trial.
The majority – just think about it – were actually shot just for show! So that you can put the required figure in the papers sent “upstairs”.
Even today they try not to talk about this tragedy. And in 2021, the man who discovered the burials and investigated the crimes of the Stalinist regime went to the colony – interfax.ru/russia/840076.
A sad monument of national history is also White Sea Canal. A 227-kilometer water “thread” connecting Lake Onega with the White Sea, of which only 37 km are man-made.
During its construction, Beltbaltlag prisoners were used almost exclusively, many of whom remained here forever.
According to official data published on Wikipedia, 12,300 people died during the construction project, which lasted less than 2 years. According to independent estimates, the number of victims may exceed 50 thousand – ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Nowadays the White Sea Canal is more a reminder of terrible times than it is used for its intended purpose. The fact is that the profitability of transportation by water here is seriously inferior to that by rail, not to mention automobiles.
