For a reason unknown to us personally, many stubbornly refuse to consider September as the most important, if not at all the best“slices” of the high tourist season. Although it would seem: many places are warm and even hot, there is plenty of sun, and even the sea can be warmed up to pleasant temperatures.
And we argue that Istanbul in September is no exception to the rule. On the contrary, the “picture” seems to have been drawn from him!
The only thing that may raise doubts in a potential vacationer is whether he should go somewhere further to the south of Turkey at this time?
To grab the elusive summer by the tail and go swimming, the beach season in Antalya continues in full swing in September. Instead of walking the streets, visiting palaces, churches and museums?!
We tend to think that this is promising and very interesting idea. But we refuse to understand why it cannot be made one of the points of an extensive entertainment program on vacation?
Let’s say you can
- visit Istanbul in early September
- and then go towards the resorts of the Aegean or, in general, the Mediterranean Sea? For the purpose of a beach holiday, relaxation and, in general, “polishing” your holiday
Why not? If the distances and duration of the (standard two-week) vacation allow this?
And in just a few hours, in a relaxed mode, even by car, you can get from Istanbul to Bodrum. Or to: Marmaris and Fethiye, Antalya or Kemer, in general – Alanya!
If you want, you can easily turn an ordinary trip into a real trip. What’s up – you can even come to Turkey from Russia in your own car.
By the way, tens, if not hundreds of thousands of tourists have already done this. Need I say that they (at least the overwhelming majority) did not regret it?!
Weather in Istanbul in September
In one word, it’s hot, sometimes even too hot. In any case, by noon the air temperature easily reaches +30 °C. And sometimes he crosses this psychological line.
What’s important is stability. Indeed, until the third ten days of September, Istanbul experiences weather that is not prone to fluctuations and, even more so, to serious failures.
Even at night, thermometers do not tend to drop below +20 °C. And during the day they stay within the range of +25-28 °C as if sewn on.
Please note that we say this not just like that, but with “meaning”. So that you don’t forget to take sunscreen, long-brimmed hats and other things that are equally useful in the south (and slightly dependent on the time of year) on your trip to Turkey.
At the end of September, cold temperatures can be expected in Istanbul, and often abruptly. For example: today +25 °C, and tomorrow – only +18 °C.
But, again, there is no need to expect any special cold weather. So you (may) just have to wear a jacket or sweater when going for a walk around the old city.
Rains in Istanbul in early autumn – rare guests. As statistics say – and in this case it can be considered an exact science – a maximum of 30-40 mm of precipitation falls for the entire month. Moreover, stormy weather lasts for 2-3 days at most.
Should we understand that the rest are certainly sunny? Of course not. But clear weather is still a priority!
During September, daylight hours in Istanbul decrease from 13 hours and 10 minutes to 11 hours and 50 minutes. The sun rises above the horizon at 6.30-7 am and sets at 19.40-18.50.
Water temperature
allows almost any citizen to swim. After all, the Sea of Marmara in September near Istanbul is initially warmed up to +23-25 degrees Celsius. And up to +20-21 °C – closer to the end of the month.
The North and Baltic seas at the start of autumn usually don’t even dare to dream of such a temperature!
It is unlikely, of course, that you will try to swim in the Bosphorus – you don’t want to get hit by a tanker? But you can go to the same Killos, a nearby Black Sea resort popular among the Turks themselves. And the Princes’ Islands, which are easily accessible by ferry, beckon!

How to dress
In general, both tourists and locals walk around Istanbul in September wearing distinctly summer clothes. And at noon they try to take refuge on the veranda of a restaurant, bar or museum, so that inadvertently don’t get heatstroke.
So there is no need to overload your suitcase with things…unless you decide to wear a new outfit every day. However, it is probably better to leave more empty space in your luggage.
To bring gifts from Turkey to friends and family. Both original souvenirs and practical things: clothes and cosmetics, sweets…
A windbreaker with a hood has a good chance of coming in handy – not during the day, but in the evening. If you are going to the mountains, for example, or decide to go from Istanbul to Cappadocia for 1-2 days, a sweater or sweatshirt will also be in demand (in the mornings, for sure).
Perhaps such clothes will please you during an evening walk along the Bosphorus – the wind near the water seems to feed additional energy.
Prices 2026
Extra-early booking under the innovative “spring to autumn” scheme promises positive emotions. Since the chances of concluding a profitable deal are high, you just need to avoid booking the first minimally satisfactory hotel.
The Verseca Hotel looks like a good and inexpensive solution to the issue of accommodation. Modest, but clean, and also – very inexpensive (50 € per day for two, 60 € for three, breakfast, however, is not included in the price). Despite the fact that it is located about 10 minutes walk from all the most interesting things in Istanbul.
We personally can recommend the noticeably more expensive (from 80 € per night for two) Costera Hotel in Fatih. Which is located at approximately the same distance from the old center, but includes excellent breakfasts in the price. This hotel also has a hammam, and the view from the windows is very good.
Participation in a city tour will cost 35-40 € – and it will be a real tour lasting 5-6 hours. For about half this amount you can ride by boat on the Bosphorus accompanied by an audio guide…
Flights to Istanbul and back will cost about ~250-300 euros per person. In any case, if you fly from some major European city: London, for example, Berlin or Belgrade.

Things to do
Now about the most interesting part. Which lies not only in the rich program of events, allowing you to see the main attractions of Istanbul in all their glory. But mainly in the freedom of your hands – after completing the excursion program, you can easily continue your vacation at sea!
It’s worth spending 2-3 days exploring the ancient city – you’ll spend at least 3-4 hours on the Topkapi Palace with its harem alone.
But need to pay attention (former) Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi – as they note in the reviews, visiting them on a not very hot day is a real pleasure.
Who wouldn’t want to climb the Galata Tower, see the graceful Sulaymaniyah, and admire the frescoes of the Chora Monastery? Of course, take a walk along the Bosphorus – if not to the Princes’ Islands, then in sight of the city.
The famous thermal baths in Yalova, a resort 90 km from Istanbul, are visited upon request. And in any case, you need to spend all day.
The same amount will be spent on a trip to Edirne with its wonderful mosque, the creation of the great Sinan. You will have to spend at least one more day if you want to see the ruins of Troy in person.
Beach holiday
As for seaside resorts, they are also available in the immediate vicinity of Istanbul. We mentioned above about the Princes’ Islands and Killos – there maybe not bad relax with children. And “one day”.
We also recommend paying attention to the towns of Sile and Agva on the Black Sea coast of the Anatolian Peninsula.
The first is located just 70 km northeast and is connected to the metropolis by excellent quality highways. The second one is located a little further away, and therefore sees fewer tourists.
There are also decent places on the Sea of Marmara. And if Çinardzhik, Armutlu, Gemlik and Mudanya are sometimes too lively, then Erdek is not bad for a relaxing family holiday.
After all, it is located at a sufficient distance – 260 km – from the metropolis. Virtually eliminating the migration of crowds of vacationers just for the weekend.
Lost in Thrace – on the other side of the sea – also looks like an interesting option. Sharkoy village. Whose beaches are never crowded with vacationers!
If we consider the more popular Turkish resorts, then Kusadasi is located at a distance of 550 km from the former Constantinople. And you can move to the beaches there, having had enough of sightseeing 6 hours in advance.
This is by car – faster by plane!
Bodrum is already about 700 km away, which is about 8 hours of driving on the highway. It will take approximately the same amount of time to travel along the highway to the Turkish Riviera. Which – in Antalya in September it is still hot – attracts at this time of year like a magnet!
