Shanghai in June – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature and rain, how to dress and what to take with you, prices 2026 for air tickets and hotels. What to do and see in Shanghai, where to go in China – says Eurotraveler.
Many people believe that June is not the “right” month for a trip to the sea and a beach holiday. In any case, if we are not talking about tropical reservoirs, but such seas as the Black and, sometimes, even the Mediterranean.
Since at the beginning of summer the weather on the local coasts seems to have not yet “settled”, the air temperatures experience completely uncomfortable changes, and if swimming is possible, it is only for “walruses”.
So what to do, what to do – you ask? What can you do for the first month of summer, other than work? And, probably, not a dacha – who wants to dig beds when the body still seems to be exhausted by vitamin deficiency?
Of course, there is a way out (if you have any money, of course). And it’s called – let’s go on a trip. For example, to the East – to China!
The country is exotic and very hot in June (not everywhere, but mostly). Promising to receive impressions that are guaranteed to paint your life with such colors that reality will no longer seem boring, monotonous and… gray.
For example, we are voting for a trip to Beijing in June. And then – to Hainan Island. Where at the beginning of summer you will be able to relax so much at sea that after that you will no longer want to look towards Sochi and Gelendzhik.
Do you want even more vivid sensations?, Are you thinking about going to Shanghai in June? And although we do not really agree with this choice – the main Chinese metropolis in the summer – not the driest place on the planet – this will not prevent us from carefully considering the climatic conditions of this city. At least in order to understand: “not at all” or “a little” is possible?!
Briefly
- Is it possible to go to Shanghai in summer? Well, who will stop you? But seriously, the period from June to August in this city is characterized by high air temperatures, as well as an abundance of precipitation. If such a mixture does not bother you and your body, why not go?
- What is the rainiest month in Shanghai? Guidebooks claim that it is June, calling it “the month of plum rains.” But we, having carefully studied the meteorological statistics of recent years, decided that July has more reasons claim to be the wettest month here
- How many days does it take to explore Shanghai? At least three, during which time you will have time to see all the main attractions and even get to the local “Venice”. For those who want a deep immersion in the local atmosphere, it’s probably better to focus on 5-7 days
Weather in Shanghai in June
It’s quite specific and not everyone will like it. However, if you have no reason to complain about your own health, then you are unlikely to run into trouble. But with inconvenience – perhaps – walking along the streets in the rain, albeit “plum”, is not fun for everyone.
One way or another, it will be warm and often even – very hot. Already at the beginning of June, the air temperature in Shanghai quite easily (one would like to say joyfully) climbs above +30 degrees Celsius. But, what is quite surprising, it does not get stuck there for a long time – on some days it can be “only” +25-27 °C.
Perhaps this is due to frequent rains, which do not give the “stagnant” heat a chance. These rains are often accompanied by thunder and lightning, which literally discharge the atmosphere – chinadailyhk.com/hk/article/338292.
Closer to mid-June, the weather pattern in Shanghai does not change – it still cannot “find itself” and fluctuates between very and acceptably hot. Likewise, at the end of the month you can expect +35 degrees Celsius one day and about +25 the next. In the evenings, almost “all the way” it is relatively smooth – about +24-26 °C.
Well, such instability (during the day) only plays into the hands of the traveler who likes to walk a lot. Well, naturally, whoever guessed to take it with him umbrella, raincoat and some shoes that will not suffer critically from walking on wet sidewalks and (sometimes) even puddles.
Humidity
in the literal sense, always at the top – from 80-85% and above. Also, during the intervals between rains, there is every chance of feeling stuffy.
The average monthly precipitation in Shanghai during June is from 160 to 200 mm. The average number of stormy days is about 15!
Oh, that means they will be dry, perhaps even clear? Actually yes. And the probability of a cloudless day, with a dome of blue sky overhead, is not so low – in Shanghai in June it reaches 25-30%.
They promise to become a separate problem mosquitoes. Or maybe mosquitoes – unless you are an entomologist, it is difficult to say for sure what kind of human blood-drinking midge lives in these latitudes.
One way or another, mosquitoes in Shanghai in June can be a problem. Both in a hotel, whose windows do not have appropriate screens, and while walking through some Bund or “Garden of Joy”.
So stock up on fumigators, sprays and other repellents that can effectively drive away bloodsuckers.

There is also a possibility of storm increased wind. Likewise, June on the coast of the South China Sea also marks the onset of the “typhoon season.” And floods in Shanghai in the event of heavy rains (more likely to happen here in the second half of June and July) are not completely ruled out.
The duration of daylight hours remains the same throughout the month – about 14 hours. On June 31, the sun rises over Shanghai at 4.50 am and sets at about 7 pm.

What to take with you
We once wrote about what things you need to take with you on a trip to China. And they did it quite efficiently, placing special emphasis on such aspects as access to the Internet, money, communication, and also electrical outlets. If interested, read it.
Now about the clothes. If you haven’t yet imagined what people wear on the streets of Shanghai in June, we’ll do it for you.
Fortunately, this is not difficult: dresses and sundresses, shirts and shorts, light summer trousers, sandals and sandals on the feet, waterproof Crocs and all possible types of sneakers – both tourists and locals are dressed in approximately this way. Of course, someone will not be too lazy to wear windbreaker with hood. But most will almost certainly try on a light, colorful raincoat.
An umbrella is not just useful, but a very necessary item in travel luggage. The Chinese themselves, by the way, keep them open not only in inclement weather, but also in clear weather, thus protecting themselves from scorching rays.
We also emphasize the need for several sets of clean clothes (in case they get sweaty or wet). Because looking for a laundry or at least a washing machine on a trip of this format is an unacceptable waste of valuable time!
Prices 2026
If you plan a (independent) trip to Shanghai for the first half of June, then you need to expect the following expenses:
- air tickets from Moscow and back will cost 50-55 thousand rubles (direct flights, about 9 hours each way, luggage included) per passenger
- A hotel room can be rented for ~80 €. Based on the combination of qualities, Shanghai Fish Inn East Nanjing Road, located near Nanjing Street, seems to be the best option. Noticeably more expensive (from 120-130 € per night), but provides a much higher level of comfort Holiday Inn Express Shanghai on The Bund. The hotel is half a kilometer from Yuyuan Garden and not too far from the Bund, and an excellent breakfast is included in the price.
Whether you spend money on excursions depends only on you – in Shanghai, in principle, it’s not the most obligatory entertainment.

It’s nice, of course, to take part in a walk with someone who knows the history of the city, but whether it’s worth 50 € is a big question. Moreover, the excursion will be held in English – Russian-speaking guides are much rarer in China and want to receive more for their services.
But cruises on the Huangpu River are relatively inexpensive (participation will cost 25-30 €). The expanses of which offer the most breathtaking views of both the Bund and the skyscrapers in Pudong.
Things to do
Take a walk along the Bund, and then take a lot of photos and selfies near and inside the “Oriental Pearl” – this is the minimum tourist program for Shanghai. Reviews talk about how popular the local Disneyland is, apparently best in China.
But we are somehow quite skeptical about this kind of entertainment (alas, we are beyond childhood and even adolescence). And it will be crowded inside in June – don’t go to the “fortune teller.” As, for sure, in the Shanghai Zoo, whose main “stars” are giant pandas.
Whether it’s hot or rainy, a stroll through the French Quarter in Shanghai is a must. Full of that very charm that for some reason is characteristic exclusively of the “good old days”.
Of course, few people in Shanghai will pass by the “Garden of Joy”, Yuyuan. Moreover, it is a green oasis, where (in theory) it should breathe easier. And, by the way, it is planned according to Feng Shui, that is (guaranteed?) it eliminates “bad” energy.
Where to go
If you are not too tired, then be sure to go and admire one of the “Shanghai Venices”. The most popular of these water villages is Zhouzhang.
There is another place not far from Shanghai that a traveler will certainly be proud to visit. Of course, the gardens in Suzhou are a real “icon” of Chinese garden architecture, and UNESCO recognized all its uniqueness.
If you have never been to the Chinese capital before, you can take the opportunity to travel from Shanghai to Beijing. Keeping in mind, however, that it is usually even hotter there at the beginning of summer. However, it’s dry!
