Baikal in August 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather in Irkutsk and Listvyanka, on Olkhon, air and water temperatures, is it possible to swim, how to dress, prices for tours, air tickets and hotels. What to do and what to see on Baikal in August, what you need to know – in the Eurotraveler review.
Fans of unusual entertainment and originals in general might like to visit Baikal in winter. To look at that famous bubble ice, drive through the snow-covered expanses on the Khivus, load hundreds, or even thousands, of natural landscapes into the memory of a smartphone or camera that will impress almost any – the most cold-blooded – observer.
But in the summer, in particular in August, Baikal appears different. Much more peaceful and calm. Also very beautiful, but beautiful with a soft beauty, almost homely.
At this time on the lake you want exactly relax and unwind. The pace of life—even for tourists—is noticeably slowing down. Long hikes and sitting on the shore, swimming in invigorating but still not icy water, fishing, literally meditating at sunset come to the fore.
A trip to Baikal at the end of summer is akin to psychotherapy. The lesson – if you find a good specialist, and in our case he is exactly that – is better than any medicine for treating injured nerves!
Would you like to try it? So we also decided that it was time!
What you need to know
- Is it possible to swim in Lake Baikal in August? The month is reasonably considered to be well suited for this activity. Especially its first half, when the water in the lake heats up to +17-18 degrees Celsius (maybe less). In the Small Sea, on the so-called Baikal Riviera, the water area on warm days warming up up to +22-24 °C
- How to dress in summer on Lake Baikal? If you mean not only a beach holiday, but also hiking in nature, the tourist’s luggage must include trousers made of thick fabric (very preferably waterproof), shirts with sleeves, windbreakers and jackets. Plus hoodies and sweaters for cooler weather. We also recommend taking long socks with you, which in many cases are an insurmountable barrier to ticks, and comfortable, waterproof shoes. Well, here is a list of things needed on an autonomous trip
- What to fear on Lake Baikal in the summer months? In hot and dry weather, fires are possible on the coast. There is also a high probability of meeting a bear – sometimes they attack (usually lonely – arigus.tv/news/incidents/150356-ulan-udenka-chudom-ostalas-zhiva-posle-vstrechi-s-medvedem/) travelers. Well, yes – it was said above about ticks, the likelihood of being bitten by them in Buryatia is by no means illusory
Weather on Baikal in August
Talking about her, you will have to be upset. Not in the sense of losing heart, but to talk about three options (you can add a fourth – Severobaikalsk – but this is too much) of the development of events.
In general, in Irkutsk in August it is warmer than in Listvyanka or Olkhon, and on some days it is significantly warmer. Is this city itself warming itself or something else – unknown – but the fact remains a fact – in it warmer than on the lake shore.
So, at the beginning of the month, and indeed throughout its entire duration, the “capital of Eastern Siberia” regularly observes air temperatures up to +20-24 °C. On other days, especially towards the end of August, it gets colder in Irkutsk (maybe no higher than +15 °C), but in sunny weather almost anyone will decide “how hot it is here”)
As for Listvyanka on Lake Baikal, it is colder there in August, even +20 degrees Celsius during the day is perceived as a gift. Olkhon was even less fortunate – on this island at the end of summer, air temperatures of about +15, sometimes +17 °C are most often recorded.
The probability of a rainy day on Lake Baikal in August is not zero. But in general, rains at this time are a phenomenon episodic and short-lived.
All this, however, does not change the fact that you will almost certainly have to walk on wet grass and make your way through damp bushes. Because the temperature differences between night and day are significant, and heavy dew falls as scheduled.
The total volume of precipitation on Lake Baikal throughout August does not exceed 30-40 mm. And the sun quite often reigns in the sky. As if he wants to emphasize that “no, you were not mistaken” by coming here at this time.
Weather forecast on Olkhon Island for the coming days.

Duration
Daylight hours range from 15.5 hours – on August 1 – to 13 hours and 40 minutes – on the threshold of September. That is, there will be plenty of time to implement extensive excursion plans.
You need to watch the sunset at the beginning of the month shortly before 21:00. But in the end it is better to start this activity an hour earlier.

Water temperature
In theory – once again – it allows you to swim. Since the coastal areas of the lake in August in some places warm up to +16-17, sometimes even +18 °C.
However, we recommend taking water baths only for people who are seasoned and accustomed to such temperatures. Or purposefully go to bays of the Small Seawhere on a sunny day the water will be much warmer.
To get from Irkutsk to the popular Mukhor Bay (car only, no public transport) you will have to spend 3.5 hours. But perhaps it will be easier to take a ride with a local resident to Shamansky Beach in the bay near the famous rock of the same name on Olkhon (you will have to go down, you won’t get there).
Or spend a few hours on the spacious and very picturesque Sarai beach nearby. Where:
What to take with you
At the very beginning of the review, we told you exactly which items of clothing have every chance of being useful to you on Baikal, even the August version. Separately and once again, we emphasize the need to have waterproof and warm – It would also be nice to have windproof clothes. You will appreciate its benefits in the event of an unexpected temperature drop of up to +12-15 degrees.
Also be sure to take along anti-tick spray, sunscreen – you can get sunburned on a clear day – and matching glasses. Swimming accessories may also come in handy – if only for sunbathing on the beach.
In reviews there is often an opinion that they will not stay in your wallet and cash — on Olkhon, for example, ATMs are not located on every corner. And in 2026, cash is a useful thing.
Is it in vain that the Russians are withdrawing it from their accounts in ever-increasing quantities with each new month – fontanka.ru/2026/06/09/76469972/?!

Prices 2026
In the summer, a resident of Moscow will pay a decent amount for flights from the capital to Irkutsk – from 40 thousand rubles. And for this money he will hardly be able to take a suitcase weighing more than 10 kg with him.
An inquisitive traveler should stay in Irkutsk for a day, or even two. During this time, you can have time to stroll through the 130th district, full of houses with elaborate wooden carvings. Yes, in general, other districts of old Irkutsk, certainly not nicknamed “Siberian Petersburg” for nothing, are worth a stroll.
You can rent a studio or a larger apartment in the city inexpensively – in August you can find what you want for 3-3.5 thousand rubles per day. Compared to many other, slightly more touristic cities in Russia, this price just doesn’t look like a gift…
A room in Listvyanka, even a tiny one, will cost at least 5 thousand rubles for two guests. Accommodation in Khuzhir on Olkhon is even more expensive – there, at the end of summer, a couple of people can rent a room at a tourist center for 6-7 thousand a day.
Excursions on Lake Baikal are not a cheap pleasure. But at the same time (sometimes) not outrageously expensive.
For example, getting to know Olkhon better on a car trip will cost 3.5-4 thousand rubles. Even a little less money will cost you a boat ride on the lake.

Things to do
The list of main attractions, those places that must be visited on Lake Baikal, is known today, it seems even to schoolchildren. In any case, it is difficult to imagine that someone has not heard about Olkhon Island and the Shamanka rock there, considered a real “place of power.”
With a little googling, a tourist can easily find information about Circum-Baikal Railway. And also about the fact that you should not only see it in person, but also take a train ride along Lake Baikal.
Moreover, it is advisable – for greater pleasure – to make this journey on a train pulled by a steam locomotive. To try to fall out of modern reality a little while listening to the clouds of steam and frantic beeps, at least mentally going back to a time when reality was understandable and at times even pleasant. And the future is relatively predictable.
In Listvyanka, visitors immediately go to the banks of the Angara, where they simply need see Shaman stone. After which you can visit the local Limnological Museum, and then climb to the Chersky Stone, from which views open in all directions.
