Is it possible to relax in Hainan in August?

Hainan in August 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather in Sanya and Dadonghai, Yalunwan, reviews, water and air temperature, probability of typhoons, humidity, is it possible to swim? What to take with you, prices for tours and hotels. What to do and what to see in Hainan at the end of summer, what you need to know – says Eurotraveler.

Whatever you want, we wouldn’t go to China at the end of summer. That is, we actually didn’t go – at one time, when there was such an opportunity.

Choosing instead of a holiday in August in Hainan beds and greenhouses (crossed out) – it doesn’t matter what exactly!

And there was a reason for that. Even, in fact, several.

But the main one: typhoons and hurricanes — not only sounded menacing, but also clearly discouraged travel. Because the risk of “getting caught” was too great to give in to the temptation and go sunbathing and swimming (in theory) on the so magnetically inviting beaches of the South China Sea.

Don’t believe it and want to try your luck? Well, we will provide you with all the facts that we have discovered.

And then you decide for yourself: whether to believe those who say: you can and should go, and typhoons are not as terrible as our life they are painted. Or you will “blow on the water” and refuse to travel in a very promising direction, but at the wrong time of the year.

What you need to know

  1. Why do people go on holiday to Hainan in August? Most expect a good or even excellent beach holiday and swimming in the sea. And they can be understood: the air temperature (stable around +32-35 °C) and sea temperature (+30 °C) look temptingly. And if you look at the prices…
  2. When is the rainy season in Hainan? It is believed that it begins as early as July and lasts until approximately October. Although in reality, powerful tropical downpours rarely occur here for several days on end. So in the summer you will definitely get more than one chance to swim (at least in the hotel pool) and interesting excursions
  3. Who is August in Hainan suitable for? Stoics To people who assessed all the risks and did conscious choice. For those who have decided that the chance to have an inexpensive vacation on the warm tropical sea is worth the risk of losing a day or two (or several) due to a tropical hurricane. You should also be able to tolerate humidity above 80 and even 90% without consequences and not pay special attention to the effect of the steam room

Weather in Hainan

It will be hot – that’s for sure. And it’s stuffy – the probability of this is also almost 100%.

However, the air temperature in Hainan in August during the day is in the range of +30-36 degrees Celsius and does not seem to strive for more. At night it drops to +24-26 °C. As if it makes it clear that I am aware of the aspirations of tourists and intend to give them the opportunity relax from the daytime stuffiness.

Will it be possible to actually do this? Everything here is individual: if you are able to tolerate such weather and constant humidity consistently above 80-85% (sometimes it’s all 100, but, of course, not every day), everything will be fine and even wonderful.

Guidebooks, however, doubt that due to the climate, families with children should go to Hainan in August. But stronger people in their reviews do not show even a shadow of doubt. Proving by personal example that it is not only possible, but also absolutely necessary – irecommend.ru/content/polnyi-yarkogo-solntsa-i-morya-eto-izumitelnyi-khainan-gde-bezopasnost-prebyvaniya-ochen-vys.

Sanya - the air temperature in Hainan in August will leave the range of +30-36 degrees Celsius

One way or another, while on vacation you need to strictly follow the daily routine.

For example, you need to swim and generally stay on the beach before 11 (preferably before 10) in the morning and after 16 in the evening. During the day you shouldn’t walk around In sunny places, it’s better not to walk around at all, but to doze off in your room. Well, take advantage of all the benefits that sunscreen, long sleeves and bucket hats provide.

The sun rises over Sanya at 6.20 am on August 1, and a month later it does so 7 minutes later. Watching the sunset on the island at the end of summer should begin shortly before 19:00. On the threshold of September, this should be done, rather, from 18.30.

One way or another, the length of the day is about 13 hours. Which should be enough to have time to do all the interesting things: shop and eat fruit and even buy some souvenirs.

Here is the weather forecast for Sanya for the coming days – worldweather.wmo.int/ru/city.html?cityId=1850.

Rains

The amount of precipitation in theory is very significant – in August alone, up to 220-240 mm falls on Hainan. Surprisingly, in the few reviews so far (China has recently become a visa-free destination for Russians) reviews of complaints, it’s as if you won’t find this.

On the contrary, literally all the attention there is paid to exotic Chinese dishes, excursions and shopping. Well, relaxing on the beach, of course. Which indirectly indicates – “we were satisfied” – but still will not convince the skeptic, who always (to begin with) expects the bad.

Well, let’s look at the official statistics! And looking at the numbers, we sternly ask: is it pouring like buckets or not?

Alas, the numbers are for you nothing definite they won’t answer. On the one hand, everything is clear – more than 200 mm per month – definitely. But how all this will be distributed over the days is unclear. And in general, it depends on the year.

If you go on vacation to Hainan in August in a good year, you will witness one or two tropical-force downpours. Which, of course, will “tarnish the reputation” of the island, but not much. Because they rarely walk “in twos and threes” in a disciplined manner and try not to be seen too much – they fall out at night.

If you’re unlucky – during your vacation there will be pour harder and harder. Plus, some stronger typhoon will reach the Chinese island.

Like the one that felled trees and delayed flights from Sanya in August 2025 (Kajiki) – rbc.ru/life/news/68ac54669a7947458bbc10d4. And at the same time he left several hundred Russian tourists on the island to wait for good weather…

Water temperature

leaves nothing to be desired – in August the sea temperature in Hainan fluctuates in a very narrow range of 29-30 °C. But you almost certainly won’t be able to swim without breaks.

Both due to the increased likelihood of strong winds and typhoons.

In the first case, a red flag is placed on the shore, and rescuers vigilantly watch to see if anyone too zealous and reckless has entered the sea (in fact, they are watching – if you don’t listen, they will pull you out and also issue you a fine). In the second, you yourself will not want to leave the hotel.

Because typhoons in these parts are not just an epic spectacle. But: both at first and second glance, they look extremely unsafe.

What to take with you

Sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher should be used on a regular basis. In those moments, of course, when you leave the hotel. Equally, dress so as not to give the tropical sun a chance to burn the exposed skin.

At the risk of seeming somewhat preoccupied, we advise you to pack a first aid kit for your trip. That is, do not rely on Chinese pharmacies. And stock up on those “first aid” supplies, who will help in case of poisoning or overheating, sunburn, cut or fever.

It is highly advisable to take out travel health insurance before your trip. Which can significantly help out and save money in case of any health problems.

Here we wrote in detail about what you need to take with you on a trip to China in addition to what has already been mentioned.

Prices 2026

package tours to Hainan from Moscow look very attractive! So a couple of capital tourists who are planning to spend a week in Sanya or Dadonghai in August will pay from 110-120 thousand rubles (from ~ €1100-1200) for the implementation of this intention.

Living on the shore of the much calmer and quieter Yalog Bay (Yalun Bay) is a little more expensive. Which, however, will still be “affordable” for the vast majority of potential travelers. Of course, after all, for a week-long tour (not everything, however, is ready-made, only breakfast is on the menu) you need to pay only 125-130 thousand rubles (from ~ €1250).

It is worth considering that the flights included in the cost of such tours will still be multiple and quite long – from a day. Those who would like to avoid such an ordeal will have to pay for the tour noticeably more – from 180-200 thousand rubles (again, in the case of starting from Moscow) for two.

But citizens traveling not on a route will be able to stay at really good hotel. Well, or one that they choose purposefully. Focusing on your own preferences, and not on the recommendations of the tour operator.

For example, we really liked the Holiday Inn & Suites Sanya Yalong Bay on the coast of Yalong Bay. A week of accommodation for two people in August 2026 will cost ~€500, but this is precisely the case when the price is justified.

It’s 6-8 minutes to the sea from the hotel at a slow pace. And yes – it has an outdoor pool!

Cost of excursions

It’s not amazing – everything is pretty standard. Pay about €25-30 (in China, by the way, it’s better to take US dollars rather than euros) – become a member of some a simple sightseeing tour. Or maybe a cruise along the coast or a visit to Phoenix Island.

Although, it must be admitted, this kind of activity in Hainan in the summer months is the lot of a few. Since climbing a hill in the middle of the day, not to mention carefully sightseeing or listening to a guide’s monologues, such activities require remarkable willpower and concentration.

Things to do

You don’t need to have the gift of foresight to assume that most of your holiday time in Hainan in August will be spent visiting the beach and water activities. As well as tasting dishes at local catering establishments and relaxing (sleep) in a hotel room.

Actually, why be surprised – that’s what we’re going for – almost everyone will say first. And there is absolutely nothing to object to this!

Only a few will probably be active on the island at the designated time. Although, of course, paying one or two visits to local shopping centers to buy gifts and souvenirs is literally necessary.

Pay special attention to the fruit departments of supermarkets. In particular, evaluate local juicy mangoes and pineapplestry mangosteens and passion fruit, see if you like papaya and durian (probably not). We’d also recommend drinking coconut milk – it’s wonderfully refreshing in hot weather.

Here are some other fruits you can try in the summer in Hainan.

What else

Those who come to the Chinese island not for a week, but for two, may find themselves able to take several excursions. Moreover, it is not difficult to realize such a desire on your own.

As the main point of interest (in our opinion), we will name the park “The Deer Turned its Head”, from the height of which excellent views panoramic views. Tourists who are confident in their ability to fight off the local monkeys can visit Monkey Island.

Nantian Thermal Baths are also on the list of “must-see” attractions in Hainan. But we’re not sure that in conditions of constant heat, soaking in a hot, albeit healing, bath can give you the emotions you’re hoping for.

Equally, in August a walk through the Yanoda rainforest looks like a dubious experiment. The place is undoubtedly very beautiful and bright. But at the end of summer it’s too hot and stuffy!
