Weather in Kamchatka in August 2026, is it worth going? on vacation? Air temperature in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, how to dress, what to take with you, prices for air tickets and tours, in hotels. What to see in Kamchatka in August: where to go and visit – says Eurotraveler.

You can argue, but in general it is useless – Kamchatka has always been and will remain for a long time a very exotic destination for a tourist trip. For many, it is very attractive, but at the same time, distant. Both literally and figuratively!

Because, firstly, the distance from Moscow is about 7,000 kilometers, and it is almost impossible to get to Kamchatka except by plane. And secondly, a trip to the Far Eastern peninsula seems to be so expensive that it seems useless for a person on an “average salary” to even think about it.

Careful review of the issue, however, destroys established stereotypes. At least some of them!

Since there are direct flights from Moscow. And air tickets are no more expensive than those that will allow you to fly to Sochi. As for the prices in Kamchatka itself, then… we will tell you about them soon!

Now – closer to the topic! Because August in Kamchatka is literally the sweetest, the peak of the high season.

It’s time to go, admire and be surprised. Go on a boat and to volcanoes, look at whales and bears, eat red caviar with a spoon and… more on all this a little later.

Worth knowing

  1. What dangers are there in Kamchatka? There is a high risk of strong earthquakes, a large number of brown bears (at the end of summer, however, they are entirely occupied with fishing) and accidents. The crash of a tourist helicopter in August 2024 with the death of everyone on board is especially indicative in this sense.
  2. Is it possible to swim in Kamchatka in summer? In theory, yes, but you need to remember that the ocean off the coast of the peninsula and at the peak of summer warms up to a maximum of +16-17 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it may be better to limit yourself to visiting local thermal baths, where the water is heated by volcanoes to temperatures that prevent freezing
  3. What to wear to Kamchatka in August? Despite the promise of warm weather, on your trip you need to take: a membrane waterproof windbreaker, a fleece sweatshirt, thick trousers and shoes suitable for long treks over rough terrain. In case of climbing a volcano, it will also be useful warm quilted jacket. Be sure to put shorts and T-shirts in your suitcase, as well as a cap or Panama hat, sunscreen and glasses. And – of course – swimwear

And in Kamchatka, salmon spawning occurs in August. And in the Kuril Lake there is so much sockeye salmon that, if you’re not used to it, it’s simply amazing!

Weather in Kamchatka in August

It’s as if it’s deliberately adapting to tourists’ “wants” – not hot, but not cold either. If only there was less rain, and the fogs would be abolished – at least on those days when you are looking forward to seeing panoramic views or taking a helicopter flight – and everything would be absolutely gorgeous.

You can’t expect much consistency from the weather, but during August the air temperature in Kamchatka during the day usually stays in the range of +15-20 degrees Celsius. On some days it may be a little (even a lot – but this is rare) higher, on some – a little lower.

But the tourist should tune in precisely to specified interval. And don’t forget that while climbing a volcano you can get sweaty and then suddenly cool down. Because at altitude it is colder and piercing winds almost always blow.

By the way, it gets very cold at night. Frosts and snowfalls almost never occur at this time of year (if we are talking about populated areas, and not, for example, Northern Kamchatka), but temperatures of about +8-10 °C are the most common thing in August.

Precipitation and sun

The rains cannot be called persistent, but they can cause some problems. Again, the average precipitation is about 70-80 mm per month. Which clearly hints that you will find 1 or 2 rainy days during your trip to Kamchatka at the end of summer.

In the reviews, by the way, they especially insist on its presence in backpacks truly waterproof raincoats and jackets. With water-repellent properties proven ahead of time)

It is also very advisable to check the soles of your mountain boots (you won’t go to the Avachinsky volcano in moccasins, will you?) for slipping. If they are prone to this behavior, then it is better to change them to something rougher. So that during the ascent along – very likely – damp rocky and clayey paths – do not waste too much energy.

Sunny days are not too rare. But the predominantly cloudy ones seem to be at least not in the minority.

You may encounter with fogs. And sometimes so strong that reality begins to be perceived in a completely fantastic light.

The length of daylight at the beginning of August reaches almost 16 hours; at the threshold of September it decreases to 13 hours and 50 minutes. Which is quite enough even for long excursions, not to mention cruises along Avacha Bay and along the coast.

On August 1, the sun rises over Petropavlovsk-Kamtchatsky at about half past four in the morning (oh, these are almost white nights), on the eve of Knowledge Day it does so an hour later. Accordingly, the time of sunset also changes: from 20.25 at the beginning of the month to 19.18 at the end.

Prices 2026

At first glance, they do not seem to justify the status of “high” and “only the rich can afford”, which they have earned over decades. Because, for example, for an air ticket to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from Moscow in August and back you need to pay from 35 thousand rubles.

However, if you go on a trip not from Moscow, you will have to pay noticeably more. From 55 thousand – for a resident of St. Petersburg or Novosibirsk, even more – for those who live in Yekaterinburg.

But the prices for accommodation (in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky) in general are practically no different from those that you will find in almost any, more or less large, city in Russia.

In particular, renting a small 1-room apartment will cost 5.5-6 thousand rubles per day. A much more modest room in a guest house or hotel costs about the same.

Products? Their prices are noticeably higher than in the vast majority of other regions of Russia. How do you like a liter of milk for 180-200 rubles? Or tomatoes – 1,000 each?

Prices for red caviar, balyki or crab meat are lower than in Moscow. But you won’t constantly eat delicacies? Which are still very expensive

As for excursions and tours, they are also in Kamchatka cannot be named a pleasure accessible to everyone.

But this is generally understandable in a region where there are few good roads?! And almost any attraction can be reached either by specially prepared wheeled vehicles (helicopter) or on foot, spending several days on the road!

Again, out of habit, the prices for automobile fuel will also cause amazement – in June 2026, a liter of diesel fuel on the peninsula costs more than 90 rubles.

One way or another, but some excursions and cruises Even those who are forced to limit their travel budget can afford it. So, a trip to Khalaktyrsky beach will cost 13-15 thousand rubles for all participants. A simple boat trip along Avacha Bay and fishing will require an investment of 11-12 thousand rubles.

What to take with you

We mentioned above the need to have insulated and waterproof clothing in your suitcase, as well as mountain boots. Accessories that protect from the sun will certainly come in handy.

We also recommend packing a large amount for your trip. first aid kit. Where there will be not only “ordinary” antipyretics, painkillers, antihistamines and antiseptics, but also insect repellent sprays and ointments.

Because mosquitoes are found in Kamchatka in August (although their “main” season is in June and July). If not in city apartments with windows covered with mosquito nets, then in valleys and gorges – for sure.

Recently, attacks on people by ticks have been recorded. Previously completely unusual inhabitants for Kamchatka – dv.kp.ru/online/news/6959526/.

Things to do

More information and exact dates of the festival are available here – kamcha10.ru/den-vulkana-na-kamchatke/.

The rest of the entertainment could be called “standard”, but in the case of Kamchatka this word is completely inapplicable. For here even a person who is usually not enthusiastic discovers in himself a tendency to constant attacks admiration.

Among the mandatory things to do in Kamchatka in August, we would highlight:

  • A boat trip along Avacha Bay, one of the largest and deepest in the world. You might even be able to see killer whales
  • Visit to Khalaktyrsky beach with volcanic sand
  • Cruise to Starichkov Island, favored by a huge colony of birds. And Cape Kekurny, where the largest sea lion rookery is located
  • Climbing the Avachinsky or Gorely volcano – there are routes there that are accessible to amateurs. If you are really ready and have mountaineering training, you can try to conquer Klyuchevskaya Sopka, the highest active volcano in Eurasia (to put it mildly, it is dangerous – 78.ru/news/2022-09-03/v_sostave_postradavshei_na_kamchatke_turgruppi_okazalsya_peterburzhec)
  • Visit to thermal springs – the closest to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky are in Paratunka

In the capital of the region, you can visit the Vulcanarium, where comprehensive information on the topic of volcanoes is available. Those who have time can also visit the local Geological Museum. Although we would advise it to be better spent on climbing the hills, the same Nikolskaya!

If finances

allow and you are ready to take a certain risk, take a helicopter excursion to the Valley of Geysers, replete with fantastic landscapes. Or visit the Kuril Lake, which in August is simply bursting with fish.

By the way, there will be bears there too – in large numbers. Moreover, they are well-fed and therefore completely indifferent towards people)

Both the Valley of Geysers and Kuril Lake can be reached on foot. But this will require some experience in hiking, careful preparation of the route and equipment. And also a certain tenacity.

In general, it is difficult, but not impossible. And in August or September you will also be rewarded with a lot of emotions from the beauty of the views opening in all directions.

Here we were thinking about what things should be put in a backpack on a hike (in an area remote from civilization). Well, as a snack – why exactly in August you need to go to Vladivostok.
