The country is famous for its beautiful cuisine, and Serbs, like many other nations, are very fond of eating. The main meal for Serb is dinner, so for breakfast they can only drink a cup of espresso (instead of water or tea). By the way, tea in Serbia is used as a drink for illness, and the variety of its varieties here strives for zero.
Since Serbia was on the border of two great empires, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian, local cuisine combined the culinary traditions of these crops: from all kinds of variations of the meat dishes of central Europe and the snacks of the Mediterranean to the sweets and spices of the kitchen of the East. So Serbian food can be described in three words – calorie, satisfying and juicy. We tell you what and where to try.
Fundamentals of Serbian national cuisine
Serbs are perfectly preparing pork

80% of Serbian food is meat (mainly pork), from which dozens of types of sausages, cutlets and chop are made. Three main local meat dishes are Chevapchichi/ ćevapčići (pork sausages, sometimes wrapped in bacon, Balkan analogue of Lulya-Kubaba), splash/ Pljeskavica (large chopped pork cutlets, fried on coals) and karajorjev Schitzil /Karađorđeva Šnicla (thick pork sausage with a kaymak filling, fried in panic). Any of these dishes can be bought both in the barbecue on the street of the smallest city, and in Serbian Kafan (cafe with traditional local cuisine), having received some side dish. Keep in mind that the portion will be 2-3 times more European.
The Serbs also have a prshut/pršut (drowned ham, the Serbian analogue of the Parma ham), Sarma/Sarma (Balkan cabbage doucial boots), cululum/kulen (chopped pork sausage with lard and spices), flour/muskalica (a dish from pre -fried meat, extinguished with a stewed with a stewed with a fucked meat. vegetables, rice and boiled potatoes), Viennese shnitzel/bečka Šnicla and Musaka/Musaka (traditional Balkan dish of eggplant or potatoes and meat). With such a variety of meat, our native barbecue are perceived by Serbs as an ordinary fast food, which in the country is not particularly popular (although the Serbs, of course, also have their own barbecue and is called razhanichi/Ražniči).
Salads, soups and a thousand and one snack

Snakes are another niche in which the Serbs are ahead of the planet.
The main salad of Eastern European cuisine is the Chop salad/ ŠPSKA SALATA (a mix of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper and grated cheese like Brynza/ Feta with oil and salt). Next comes the Serbian salad/Srpska Salanta (mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, bell pepper, chili, oil and salt pepper), our beloved olivier/ruska salada, which is also called the “Russian salad” in Serbia, and cabbage salad/kupus salada (fresh cabbage, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil, vegetable oil vinegar, black pepper).
If you forget about salads, soups (for example, Chorba/SHORBA – a delicious stew of meat or fish with vegetables), potatoes, eggplant snacks, beans (for example, Pasulj – the famous Serbian bean soup with vegetables) and kaymak, then the main Serbian appetizer is paprika/PECHENA Paprika (baked or fried on charcoal peppers with butter, vinegar and garlic) and ayvar/ajvar (fried and stove red paprika twisted with tomatoes). It is smeared on bread, meat, side dish or just eaten with spoons from a can. Generally speaking, the Serbs do anything with peppers (this is their national pride) – they bake, salt, pickle and prepare a hundred spin for all relatives and for sale.
Baking and sweets from the Ottoman Empire

This is a separate category of the pleasure of Serbian cuisine, or rather, eastern, since most flour products came from the Ottoman Empire. Such food is considered not a festive, but everyday joy – from early morning in any bakery of the city you can buy a buff you (a puff dough cake with meat, cheese, spinach, cherries and so on, which eat without special ceremonies and drink yogurt), Gibanica (cigarette walnuts, a pie with combs. sour cream, cottage cheese and apples, raisins and poppy), a palanchik/Palanchik (Serbian pancake with homemade jam, fruits or chocolate or traditional – with sweet millet porridge and walnuts), Potitsa (roulettic with a stage/tarhun) or coch/koch (delicate pie from mannered cereals and a mannered cereal whipped cream with sweet milk cream).
As for sweets of a different kind, in Serbia you can also try the delicious Turkish baklava, dried fruits and nuts.
Drinks for every taste and degree

With alcohol, the Serbs have special relations – they drink a lot here and without a twinge of conscience. The business card of Serbia-Rakia/Rakia (40–50-degree fruit tincture, can be plum, honey, quince, cherry, raspberry, pear). To make it convenient to drink from sunset to dawn, the Serbs invented a special dishes – Chokanchichi (glass bubbles with a thick bottom), which can be taken in the hand and dance in the Kafan, without fear of pouring a neighbor and saying loudly: “lived”. A drink with a lower alcohol content, suitable for calm gatherings, is a blackberry wine in which only 4 degrees and not a gram of chemistry.
We occupy a special place in the heart of Serba. There are dozens of different breweries and ghmelly drinks in a seven -billion country. The most famous and tasty brands are behindjar, jolen, nikšićko, and from craft beer – Kabinet Brewery, Kaš, The Black Turtle, Medved Pivnica.
There are non -alcoholic and soft drinks too. For example, the simplest lemonade (water mixed with lemon juice), in which lemon concentration is 80%, and water is 20%. And then coffee, Coca-Cola and mineral water “Prince Milos” go.
