Nizhny Novgorod in August 2026 — what to see? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, is it worth going on vacation: prices for tickets and excursions, in hotels. What to do and where to go in Nizhny Novgorod in early August and on City Day, interesting events, concerts, festivals – in a detailed report by Eurotraveler.
August is a traditional month of holidays. Not only in Russia – at least in North America and Europe, the overwhelming number of working citizens use this time to relax. By which many – also quite traditionally – mean travel!
Usually, of course, people go on vacation at sea. After all, even in Russia, facing the harsh Arctic Ocean, there are generally enough places where you can swim and sunbathe.
But someone who doesn’t think quite traditionally, at the end of summer, consciously goes in a different direction. Why not, for example, go and see St. Petersburg in August? Or not visit the completely emptying Moscow, immediately getting rid of its usually amazing traffic jams?
Take an inspiring cruise along the Volga, for which you somehow never had the time or money before? Or – and this is also a great option – not to visit Nizhny Novgorod in August?
Which, on the one hand, temporarily loses a certain number of townspeople going to the southern seas. And therefore he becomes quiet and relaxed, even imposingforgets about traffic jams and queues?
On the other hand, Nizhny Novgorod celebrates “City Day” on August 16 (3rd Saturday of the month). From the point of view of various festivals and other entertainment events, it is customary to prepare very thoroughly for what date!
How do you like this idea? Is it fresh and unusual enough – in the summer in Russia you are supposed to go to completely different (for example, coastal) places?
It seemed original and unworn to us. And also easy and simple (that is, “inexpensively”) feasible. So much so that we found out all the details!
Briefly
- When is the best time to go to Nizhny Novgorod? The best time is considered to be the cool months: May and September, when the weather is warm but not hot, allowing you to walk a lot and see a lot of sights. However, the summer months, like August, are also good for visiting the Volga city on weekends in order to have fun and change the scenery
- Where to go first in Nizhny Novgorod? We will name the Kremlin and the pedestrian street Bolshaya Pokrovka, on which a considerable number of houses of beautiful architecture have been preserved. You should also definitely take a walk along the Nizhne-Volzhskaya (and then Verkhne-Volzhskaya) embankment and see the building of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair
- How much money will you need for a holiday in Nizhny Novgorod in August? In general, a couple of people can spend 10-12 thousand rubles per day. This includes living expenses (studio – from 4-5 thousand per day), food and entertainment program
Weather in Nizhny Novgorod in August
In recent years, statistically it has been so good that it is not even clear how exactly to exercise your right to walking tours of the city. Since on some days the air temperature rises to values that clearly hint at need to cool down in the nearest body of water.

In particular, in August the weather in Nizhny Novgorod can stun both tourists and citizens themselves with air temperatures up to +30-36 °C. However, in the second half of the month, that is, closer to September and the “Day of Knowledge,” everything becomes “more or less.”
That is, it is tolerable from the point of view of outdoor activity. And at times it’s even cool: it can be either +22-24 or only +16-18 °C.
In the evenings, and especially at night, it traditionally gets even colder. And if temperatures in the region of +18 degrees are perceived as quite logical – the end of summer is in the yard – then anyone and everyone will consider +10-12 °C to be too much for this area at the end of summer.
However, the cool night air does not interfere with swimming. Since the water in lakes and rivers near Nizhny Novgorod at the peak of August warms up to +24-26 °C.
Note that excessively hot periods – far from the norm for the city on the Volga. Traditionally, summer ends here – and numerous reviews confirm this – under the sign of much more moderate temperatures in the range of +23-27 °C.
Precipitation
The number of rainy days in the Nizhny Novgorod region in August is small – it usually does not exceed 3-4 for the entire month. But the average statistical precipitation rate can hardly be considered very insignificant – 50 mm is quite a few!
One way or another, the rains are unlikely to seriously affect the plans of those who came to visit interesting places in the Nizhny Novgorod region for the weekend. Because they are not protracted!

How to dress
It is unlikely that you will spend a lot of time thinking about what people wear in Nizhny Novgorod during August. Since the answer to this is obvious – yes, exactly the same as in Moscow – they dress according to the weather.
It will be hot – shorts and breeches, T-shirts and T-shirts, long-brimmed hats and caps will be used. If weather forecasters predict rain, an umbrella will appear in your hands, and in your purse or backpack, along with water, you will also have weightless raincoat.

We recommend stocking up on windbreakers and sweatshirts for taking part in water excursions along the Volga. Especially if they start early in the morning or end late in the evening.
Equally, similar (slightly) warming clothing may come in handy for evening walks around the city. And of course, if you go on a “long-term” excursion in the surrounding area: to Arzamas and Diveevo, to Lake Svetloyar or to Boldino.
Prices 2026
Let’s assume you decide to travel to Nizhny Novgorod from Moscow by train. And what – this is a completely logical idea?!
Because the “Swallow”, starting from the Eastern Station of the Russian capital, will spend on travel less than 4 hours. And a ticket this summer costs from 2,800 – 3,000 rubles per person – if purchased in advance, about a month before the trip.
There is no doubt that in total you will spend less on travel if you plan to take a car ride on the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod route with a group of 3-4 people. But traveling by train still looks like a much more comfortable and less adrenaline-pumping experience!
As for hotels, we recommend focusing on a price range of 4.5-5 thousand rubles per night (for two). Alas, this is a modern reality: if you find something for less money, you will almost certainly have to sacrifice comfort.
For our part, we will once again praise this solution to the issue of accommodation while traveling as rented apartments. Moreover, in the case of Nizhny Novgorod, you can rent a 1-room apartment for comparable or even less money than they ask in city hotels.
But you will have a much larger space at your disposal, plus an equipped kitchen. And sometimes – often – there is the opportunity to accommodate not just two, but three or four.
Group bus excursions are inexpensive – participation costs 900 – 1,100 rubles, but the abundance of people can tire you – especially in the summer. Country trips will not ruin you either; a one-day bus trip with a guide to Arzamas (and) or Diveevo will cost ~ 2.5-3 thousand rubles.
Walking around Nizhny Novgorod with an individual guide is also not an expensive pleasure – you can take part in a 2-hour sightseeing event for 5.5-6 thousand rubles (for 1-5 people).

Things to do
To begin with, we advise you to pay attention to the announcement of interesting events that may take place in Nizhny Novgorod in August 2026 in honor of City Day.
There are no specifics yet. But you should take into account that one way or another, it should be fun during the holiday: there will probably be performances by artists and amateur groups, and a “Parade of Brass Bands” will take place along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.
In 2024, for example, the following events were planned:
- 14-18.08 — “Volga Fiesta”, hot air balloon festival
- August 17-18 “Volga Regatta – 2024”
- 18-24.08 – “Pomolov Cup”, All-Russian competition in parachuting
At the beginning of the month (3.08) a major triathlon tournament IRONSTAR is held in Nizhny Novgorod. But the gastronomic festival “Arzamas Goose” was postponed to the beginning of September.
Where to go
The monastery in Diveevo and the “Goose Capital”, Arzamas, are especially popular among out-of-town tourists. But we will also advise you to personally see the sights of Gorodets, where incredibly beautiful old wooden houses have been preserved, and to visit Chkalovsk, the “Malaya Rodina” of the outstanding pilot Valery Chkalov.
Connoisseurs of Russian poetry and literature will certainly want pay a visit Boldino, the estate in which Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin created some of his most outstanding works. And architecture – they will visit the Sheremetev Castle, located in a beautiful place on the banks of the Volga.
The Nizhny Novgorod town of Semenov is the birthplace of the famous “Golden Khokhloma” painting, souvenirs from which foreigners so willingly took away from Russia in their time. And Lake Svetloyar is generally considered a kind of “place of power” – according to legend, it was here that the fabulous city of Kitezh once stood.
