Old Ladoga There is something to please and surprise your guests. But its main attraction –This is an old fortress. It is a historical monument of architecture and is part of the complex of the Old Ladoga historical-architectural and archaeological museum-reserve. The fortress is located right in the city center.
In this area, it has long been necessary to build defensive structures. The first of them was wooden and appeared already on the border of the 9th-10th century. Then, during the rule of the Grand Duke Oleg, the fortresses began to be built from stone. They performed the function of protecting the waterway to the Baltic Sea.
The fortress that can be seen now was built only in the 16th century. Further, one was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. To date, it is partially destroyed, but nevertheless part of the fortifications has been preserved.
Fortress in Old Ladoga She served the defense of the city until the end of the Northern War, after which she lost its fortification function. In 1771, she became a museum. It contained a large collection of ancient objects since the Stone Age.
The appearance of the Old Ladoga fortress is very impressive. This is not surprising, because the thickness of its walls reaches 7 meters, and the height of the tower is 7-12 meters. Its complex includes the St. George Church, which is considered an architectural monument of the pre -Mongol period. Now it also serves as a museum.
The main decoration of the church is the old fresco “The Miracle of George about the serpent”, which is the first image of the saint, which has reached our times. The church is included in the World Heritage of UNESCO.
In the summer, the fortress takes place a traditional annual festival, which is a reconstruction of the historical events of Ladoga, and schoolchildren arrange a “Lyud Posadsky” holiday during the holidays.
